I need to factory reset my HP LaserJet MFP M234sdw because the password I set when setting it up doesn't work now (might have been too long).  As far as I can tell from all the forum post and YouTube videos, there is no way to reset it to factory defaults.  I've tried powering it on while holding the "-" and "x", that didn't do anything.  I holding down the Wifi button and the "x" but that just reset the wifi.  Tried removing the toner while powering it on and holding the buttons but that just thru a cartridge error.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Hi @derekcooper87

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you are attempting to perform a factory reset on your HP LaserJet MFP M234sdw. However, using the troubleshooting method (Power button + X) did not resolve the issue, as it only reset the Wi‑Fi settings. I would recommend performing a full factory reset through the Embedded Web Server (EWS) page. Please follow the steps below:

Restore factory defaults from the printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Restore factory defaults from printer Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • Open the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS), and then click the Settings or System tab.
  • If you are prompted to log in or enter the printer PIN, enter admin for the username (HP LaserJets only), enter the PIN from the printer label, and then click Submit or OK. This label is typically located inside the cartridge access area or printer door.

Location of the PIN on the printer label

  • Restore your printer to factory defaults.
  • For most HP printers, click Restore Factory Defaults or Factory under Restore Defaults. Click Restore Factory Defaults > Yes.

For HP LaserJet printers, click Service, and then click Restore defaults > OK.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
