I have an OfficeJet Pro 7740. The screen just shows Use Setup Cartridges. I don’t have the ink cartridges that came with the printer. The printer is out of warranty. Where can I buy setup cartridges or is there a way to permanently bypass this requirement?

Hi @Bstreet77,

Welcome to HP Support Community!

To bypass the message on the printer the only option left is to perform an OOBE reset and re-initialize the printer.

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

I replied to your private message, but I do not have an OfficeJet Pro 8700. I have a 7740. Is the process the same for both models?

Hi,

Thank you for getting back! 😊

Yes, the reset process I shared is the same for both the OfficeJet Pro 7740 and the 8700 series, as they use the same user interface and setup (OOBE) screen system. That’s why the steps apply to your 7740 model as well.

Please go ahead and follow the steps from the private message to complete the reset and reinitialize the printer. Once done, it should bypass the setup cartridge message.

If you need any help while performing the steps, just let me know, I’m here to assist you!

Have a great day ahead, and if this resolves the issue, kindly mark the post as “Accepted Solution” so it can help others too. 😊

This did not work although the error I am not getting is "The indicated cartridges are not communicating correctly with the printer..."

The cartridges installed are currently working in another printer of the same model.
