HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I downloaded the firmware update, but the 'install update' button never enabled.  Printer was on but not sure it was online wirelessly (no USB cable).  Tried to repeat process.  Same thing.  Rebooted computer and turned off and unplugged printer to 'reset' to try again.  Printer never powers up.  When plugging it in, I hear the motor for about 6-7 seconds then stops.  No lights and no response from power button.  Printer was working fine until I tried the firmware update.  I recently installed a new toner cartridge (and printed one page) but even a bad cartridge wouldn't create a power issue.

Hi @Steve221

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, It sounds like your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w has encountered a power issue after attempting a firmware update. Based on your description, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Troubleshooting Steps for Power Issue on HP LaserJet Pro M29w Printer:

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the printer completely from the power source.
  • Wait for 30 Seconds: Give the printer a brief period (30 seconds) to discharge any remaining power and reset its internal circuitry.
  • Reconnect and Power On: Plug the printer back in, then press and hold the Power button for 10-15 seconds to see if it powers up.

Check for Firmware Update Interruption If the firmware update was interrupted or unsuccessful, the printer's firmware could have become corrupted. Since the printer isn't powering up normally, this may be the issue.

  • Use the HP Firmware Recovery Tool: Some HP printers support recovery from a failed firmware update. You can attempt to recover the printer using the HP Firmware Recovery Tool:
    • Download the recovery tool from the HP Support site.
    • Follow the instructions on the website or recovery tool to re-install the firmware using a USB cable (if the wireless connection is not available).
    • Note: This step may require the printer to be powered on and recognized by the tool, so it might not work if the printer remains unresponsive.

Try Powering Up with a Different Power Outlet

  • Test with a Different Outlet: Sometimes, electrical issues like power surges can cause the printer to behave abnormally. Try plugging the printer into a different power outlet or use a different power strip to ensure it's receiving adequate power.

Check the Printer's Power Supply and Cable

  • Inspect the Power Cable: Check the printer's power cord for any visible damage or fraying. A damaged power cable could prevent the printer from turning on.
  • Try a Different Power Cord (if available): If you have another compatible power cord, try swapping it to see if the issue is with the cable.

Perform a Hard Reset on the Printer’s Control Panel

  • If the printer has a control panel screen, look for a reset option in the menu (though the printer must be powered on for this). This can sometimes help clear any firmware or system glitches.

Remove and Reinstall the Toner Cartridge

  • Reinstall the Toner: A new toner cartridge can sometimes cause the printer to fail to start properly if it's not seated correctly. Open the toner compartment, remove the toner cartridge, and reseat it securely. Then try turning the printer on again.

Check for Any Error Indicators

  • Listen for Beeps or Clicks: When you power up the printer, listen for any unusual beeping or clicking sounds that might indicate an internal error, such as a stuck motor or paper jam.
  • Examine the Printer’s LEDs: Although you mentioned there are no lights, check for any faint LED indicators, even if they’re dim, which might give you a clue about the state of the printer.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

None of those worked.  I tried most before I posted.  I ended up scrapping it and buying a new LaserJet M140w.

Looks identical to the first one but of course takes a different cartridge.  It makes a strange 'grinding' sound when scanning that I don't remember in the old one.  Hope it's not a sign of problems to come!
