Hi @TR_Neil,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Printing Avery L7162 labels on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw can be tricky if the alignment settings aren't configured correctly. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you resolve the issue.
Ensure Template and Printer Settings Match
- Use the correct Avery L7162 template in your software. You can download the template for programs like Microsoft Word or design software from Avery's website.
- Double-check that your document settings match the label's dimensions and layout.
Set the Paper Type Correctly
- Labels have a different thickness compared to regular paper. In your printer settings:
- Open the printer's Properties or Printing Preferences.
- Under Paper Type, select Labels or Heavy Paper.
Align the Paper Guides
- Ensure the label sheets are loaded correctly in the printer tray.
- Adjust the paper guides to snugly fit the label sheets without bending or curling.
Print Alignment Test
- Many Avery templates include an alignment test feature:
- Print a test sheet on plain paper.
- Place it over a blank label sheet to verify alignment.
- Adjust margins or scaling settings in your software if needed.
Disable Scaling
- In your printer settings, set Page Scaling or Fit to Page to None or 100% Actual Size.
- This prevents the printer from shrinking or stretching your labels.
Update Printer Firmware and Drivers
- Ensure your printer's firmware and drivers are up to date. Check for updates on the HP support website.

Test Using Another Application
- If the problem persists, try using a different application like Avery Design & Print or Adobe Acrobat to ensure the issue isn't software-related.
Check for Printer-Specific Margins
- Your printer might have a non-printable margin. If the top or side alignment is consistently off, adjust your template's layout to compensate.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
