HP PSC 1402  printer

I have un/re-installed the All-in-One software for this printer many times over the years. Recently another problem caused the printer to lose connectivity with my PC

I have tried to re-install the software multiple times but end up with a Fatal Error during installation 7zS2850\hpzsetup.exe
I have removed the printer/software many times, run troubleshooters, etc. I even went throught the registry and deleted every Hewlett and hp key (except for Scan & Capture). I am pretty certain that I cleaned the registry. I could find no trances anyware of residual software. I did this in response to an annoying TrayApp popup

The printer is old and no longer supported. I do not have the original disk. I am too far past any System Restore options

I am out of options. I have too many ink cartridges to easily give up and I hate to through away anything that works or should work

Suggestions? Thx

Hi @Gumph,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you’ve done a thorough job troubleshooting this issue!

Here are a few steps that might help resolve the Fatal error 16501349 with the HP PSC 1402 printer installation on Windows 11:

1. Download Basic Drivers for Windows

  • Since the HP PSC 1402 is no longer officially supported, the original software package may not be compatible with Windows 11, especially if it was designed for much earlier versions of Windows.
  • Try downloading the HP Universal Print Driver for older HP devices, as it often works with legacy printers. You can find this on the HP support website. Choose the PCL5 version if available, as it’s more likely to work with older printers.
  • Install only the driver (without additional HP software) and use Windows' built-in print and scan utilities to manage print jobs.

2. Use Compatibility Mode

  • Right-click on the hpzsetup.exe file, select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and enable Run this program in compatibility mode for. Choose Windows 7 or Windows XP from the dropdown.
  • Run the setup file again and see if the error persists.

3. Use the Windows Built-In Printer Setup

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and select Add device.
  • If Windows can detect the HP PSC 1402, it may install a basic driver automatically. This can sometimes bypass the need for HP-specific software.

4. Check for .NET Framework Dependencies

  • Older HP software may require certain versions of the .NET Framework, which may not be pre-installed in Windows 11.
  • Go to Settings > Apps > Optional features > More Windows features and enable older versions of .NET (such as .NET 3.5).
  • Restart your PC, then try reinstalling the software again.

5. Manual Printer Port Setup

  • If the printer is connected via USB, ensure the correct USB port is selected in the printer properties.
  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click the HP PSC 1402, and select Printer properties. Go to the Ports tab, and ensure the correct port is selected.

6. Try HP Print and Scan Doctor HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • HP’s Print and Scan Doctor tool might identify issues even though the printer is no longer supported. This tool checks for problems in the print spooler, drivers, and connectivity that could interfere with installation.

7. Use HP’s Generic Print and Scan Drivers

  • HP provides generic drivers for older printers that may work with basic print and scan functionalities.

8. Alternative Scan Options

  • If you only need scanning functionality, use Windows Scan from the Microsoft Store or HP Smart (if it can detect your printer) for scanning without the full HP software suite.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
