Even with an HP chip the after market cartridges won't work.  I think it is a scam that HP would suddenly "increase the security" of their firmware which also eliminates non-HP products from being used, especially after spending a few hundred dollars on the cartridges, which used to work.  If this is the final solution from HP, I will definitely be looking to shop other brands of printers as it is cheaper to buy a new printer rather than purchase HP cartridges.

Hi @bc01086,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your printer not accepting non-HP cartridges after a firmware/security change. Let’s go through a few checks.

Check Cartridge Recognition and Seating

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Remove all cartridges.
  3. Reinstall each cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.
  4. Ensure the cartridges match the exact model required.
  5. Close the door and allow the printer to initialize.

Verify Cartridge Compatibility

  1. Confirm the cartridges are designed for your specific printer model.
  2. Check if they are listed as compatible with your region.
  3. Ensure the cartridges are not expired or previously used.
  4. Avoid mixing different cartridge types in the same printer.
  5. Replace any cartridge that shows as unsupported.

Clean Cartridge Contacts

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Remove the cartridges.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
  4. Gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridges.
  5. Let them dry fully and reinstall.

Check Printer Firmware Settings

  1. On the printer, go to Setup > Preferences or Printer Maintenance.
  2. Look for “Cartridge Protection” or similar setting.
  3. Disable it if enabled.
  4. Save changes and restart the printer.
  5. Reinsert the cartridges and check status.

Update or Reset Printer

  1. Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance.
  2. Check for firmware updates and install if available.
  3. Restart the printer after update.
  4. If issue persists, perform a power reset (disconnect power for 60 seconds).
  5. Power ON and test again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Best regards,

I'm an HP Employee.
