My Deskjet 4133e printer needs a firmware update and is no longer recognizing my instant ink cartridges. I cannot use my printer for anything as a result. I cannot access advance settings or even complete the setup because it appears to the printer that I do not have a instant ink plan although I do. How in the world can I update the firmware (without using the app)? My warranty has expired so cannot even resolve issue through customer support with paying. Can you update firmware directly from printer without the app or a computer/cellphone?

Hi @Bshort,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your printer is not recognizing your Instant Ink cartridges and you need a firmware update, you typically have a few options.
- Use HP Smart App: The HP Smart App is often the easiest way to update firmware, manage your Instant Ink subscription, and access advanced settings. However, since you mentioned that you cannot use the app, let's explore other options.
- USB Connection to a Computer: Some HP printers allow firmware updates via a USB connection to a computer. You may need to visit the official HP support website, locate your printer model, and check if there are firmware updates available for download. If so, you can download the firmware to your computer and then follow the instructions provided to update your printer.
- Directly from the Printer: Depending on the printer model, there might be an option to check for firmware updates directly from the printer's control panel. This is typically found in the settings or setup menu on the printer itself. Navigate through the menus to find the firmware update option.
Please note that not all printers support direct firmware updates from the printer. If your printer doesn't have this option, you may need to use one of the other methods mentioned.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I've updated the firmware and set it to do automatically going forward however still not functioning. For some reason I am unable to complete the Smart App setup process. It goes through all the steps and when I attempt to complete setup I receive this error message. Verizon has reset my modem to its initial settings and I did a factory reset of printer and same thing happens.
