HP Envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I've been using the printer for the past 2 months and didn't have any problem till now. I recently bought a remanufactured H62XL black ink cartridge for it and the printer does not accept it because apparently only original cartridges can be used with the printer.

I searched some online forums and found out that this was related to a firmware update created by HP some months ago.

Also read in the forum that HP was planning to reverse these firmwares in order to make 3rd party or reused cartridges to be accepted by the printers but could only find these firmware updates for OfficeJet series.

I would like to know if there will be any available updates to reverse these limitations for HP Envy 5540 and where can i find it.

Cheers

Ah, that is different!   The cartridge you installed was used in that printer or another printer that had Cartridge Protection turned on.   That cartridge can ONLY be used in the printer is was protected in.  Period.  No way to reverse that error.

Make sure in your printer you have Cartridge Protection turned OFF!   Use EWS to check that setting.

The 5540 was not part of the firmware issue at all.   There are no updates for that printer.

I have the same problem with my 4630 printer. Worked fine on refurbished ink then overnite it rejects them

and says "cartridge failure". Does same with new ones.  The software must have been updated or the preloaded

firmware was triggered through the internet.  This is unethical if not illegal.  I have owned 5 HP computers and '4

hp printers.  I will never own another HP product unless they undo this monopolistic maneuver very quickly.

The 4630 printer was not affected by the firmware upgrade months ago.   Only Officejet and OfficejetPro series printers were.

Sabertooth04-Thanks for trying to help.  You say the 4630 printer was not affected by the firmware upgrade months ago. Only Officejet and OfficejetPro series printers were.  My machine is an HP4630 Officejet All-in-one printer, scanner, fax. The serial number is : CN3CC2VO61 , FPU NO. B4LD364001.  My warranty expired last January. It has worked fine for months on refurbished ink cartridges both for tricolor and black  61XL replacement or refurbished cartridges. They are indicated replacements for CH563W and CH564WN.  I have used these from a couple different vendors.

Since it was working fine one day last week and the next time i used it it indicated "cartridge

failure, replace ink cartridge. It indicated the black one. I tried 2 new ones with same result,

I followed the other tips of turning the unit off, unplugging from the wall receptacle and then

reversing and restarting all with same result.  Since this occurred overnight, and then I read

about the preprogrammed firmware implant, it just appeared that was likely the problem.

Finally I tried leaving out the black cartridge and printing with just the tricolor and it worked.

I did not know you could print with just tricolor and produce a black print.  The tricolor cartridge is from the same vendor and was still working ok last night.  This will get me by until I find  a solution to the black ink cartridge rejection.  If I knew a way to "restore" the printer to previous settings as of a week ago, I believe that might show if a software change has occured.

From the beginning it has used the indicators that try to push you to use their expensive

ink, Like, "counterfiet or non-HP cartrige dected" but you could  choose to dismiss

it and then dismiss a couple of pop-ups suggesting  using HP constant ink supply, etc.

But, this time it gives no alternative, You can not get rid of the "cartridge failure " notice

except by just leaving it out and going solo cartridge with the tricolor.

i did peel off the lable on the cartridge and it had the original HP lable for CH563W under

the refurbisher lable stuck over it. It has worked fine for several days and should be ok.

it would be unlikely that the two additional refurbs I tried would both be defective..

Any other suggestions?  I use windows 10 on my HP laptop, if that is any help. I was going

to try the "generic PCL lazerjet driver" as another post suggested, but it was not available

among several others listed in my printer settings.   If this is just a software block, there

should be a way to bypass or dismiss this problem.  I have no concern about harming the

printer with refilled cartridges and HP should not take away our ability to use other suppliers who are much more competive in their pricing.  That should be illegal .

Here is all the data.

This Post pertains to the following OfficeJet products listed in the following table that has new firmware that disables the cartridge security affecting cartridges using Non-HP security chips.  If your printer is not listed here, it is not affected.

The optional firmware update to remove dynamic security is now available. For more information and direct links to the firmware updates, see Dynamic Security Feature Affecting Use of Non-HP Cartridges.

OK. Thanks. So that provides a link to download software to dismantle the Dynamic Security

feature for the listed Printers.  I would like to try that for my HP4630 Officejet All-in-one because I believe the cartrige is fine to use if the machine would let dismiss the caution and try it.  I have seen many others on this forum and other websites who are complaining of the same

thing.  If you could give me a link to find a download that would let me try the cartridge , it would answer my questions. I believe some direction was updated via the internet connection that is causing the rejection and indication of cartridge failure.  If that is the case that HP has

introduced a change like this without notice (before sale) that HP printers will Only accept

certified HP ink, then that is a radical practice and a deal breaker for me.  I have bought Five HP computers and 4 HP printers, but there are too many alternatives to tolerate that kind of sharp practice.  Restore my faith and give me a link to delete the Dynamic Security Feature on this

HP 4630.  Thank you Sabertooth04 for your help.

As stated before and the above information the HP 4630 has no firmware issues regarding firmware security issue.
