Hi @Multifluid,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Firmware Update Issues with the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

1. Check Internet Connection

Make sure that your printer is connected to an active internet connection. This is essential for the printer to download the latest firmware updates.

2. Ensure Correct Update Method

Try updating the firmware using different methods if one method fails:

  • Via Printer Control Panel: Navigate to the Menu > Tools > Maintenance > Firmware > Check for Update. Follow on-screen instructions to update.
  • Via Embedded Web Server (EWS): Access the EWS by typing the printer's IP address in a web browser. Go to General > Firmware Update and follow the instructions.
  • Via HP Printer Update Utility: Download and install the HP Printer Update utility, select your printer, and follow the instructions to update the firmware.

3. Restart Your Printer and Network Devices

Restart your printer, router, and any network devices. Sometimes, simply rebooting these devices can resolve connectivity issues that might be preventing the update.

4. Use Direct Connection

Sometimes, connecting the printer directly to your network (e.g., via Ethernet cable) can help if wireless connectivity is unstable.

5. Check for Error Messages

Look for any specific error messages on the printer's control panel or within the update utility. Use these messages to guide further troubleshooting.

6. Manual Firmware Update

  • Download Firmware from HP Support: Visit the HP Support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest firmware version.
  • Install via USB: Copy the firmware update file to a USB flash drive. Insert the drive into a USB port on the printer and follow any on-screen instructions to complete the update.

I hope this helps.

I tried again all ways of updating the firmware, you describe. the result is always in picture 1 (sorry, all in German)Picture 1Picture 1Picture 2Picture 2

The fimware update via the software tool fails as well. I tried shuting down and restart many times.

Update via USB: I doesn't seem to capture the USB content, so nothing happens when I plug in the USB drive with the FW data.

My printer is connected via LAN so I disconnected LAN and switched to WiFi. Still no success.

USB Update fails the same way like in picture 1.

Hi @Multifluid,

Thank you so much for the detailed update. I truly appreciate your patience in trying every method so thoroughly. I see you’re still stuck with the same firmware update error, even over LAN, Wi-Fi, and USB, and that the printer does not recognize the USB update either.

Let’s try a few advanced steps to push this through:

Double-check USB stick format.

Make sure your USB drive is FAT32 formatted (NOT NTFS or exFAT).

Only place the .rfu firmware file on the root of the USB, no folders.

Use a small USB drive (preferably under 16 GB).

Use a Different USB Port

If your printer has multiple USB ports, try another one.

Insert the USB stick before powering on the printer.

Power cycle the printer with the USB inserted, some models detect the firmware at boot.

Rename Firmware File (If Applicable)

Sometimes renaming the file to a simple name like firmware.rfu helps the printer recognize it.

Make sure there are no extra characters or double extensions.

Try a Firmware Recovery (Forced Method)

If the printer won’t accept the normal update:

Disconnect LAN/Wi-Fi, the printer should only see the USB.

Insert the USB.

Power OFF the printer.

Press and hold the Cancel (X) button while turning the printer ON, keep holding until you see the USB update message or the printer screen changes.

(Not all models have a forced recovery mode, but this works on many LaserJets.)

Double-check the Firmware File

Please make sure the exact firmware matches your model (MFP 3302) and region.

Download the firmware again from the official HP Support site.

I hope this helps.

Hi, the file I'm downloading has a different ending. it is bdl and not rfu. Please check this url

If I rename the file to rfu the printer does not recognize the file, so I guess the bdl should be correct.

Can we please open a case for this?
