I noticed that there is new firmware for HP Color Laser MRP 179fnw. However, the firmware (HP_Color_Laser_MFP170_Series_V3.82.01.16) does not install under Windows11. I was hoping it would fix my repeat-shadow printing 19 cms down on the same print (with a brand new HP drum!).
I run usblist2.exe from the unzipped firmware package, but nothing happens.
I also tried HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.7.4 and clicked the Update Firmware button. This button links to a web page at hp.com that DOES NOT EXIST.
So far nothing works. I cannot get in touch with HP. The support pages won't let me reach a life person. Why????
Does anybody have an idea how to solve it??

Hi @Printalways,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating that you're encountering issues with updating the firmware on your HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw printer, especially given the printing problem you're experiencing. Here are a few steps and suggestions that might help you resolve the firmware update issue and potentially fix the printing problem:
- Verify Compatibility: Double-check that the firmware version you downloaded is indeed compatible with your specific printer model (HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw).
- Run as Administrator: Try running usblist2.exe (which is used to update the firmware via USB) as an administrator. Right-click on usblist2.exe and select "Run as administrator" to see if this allows the firmware update process to start.
- Use HP Smart App: Sometimes, using the HP Smart app (available for Windows 11) can simplify the process of updating firmware. Open the HP Smart app, navigate to your printer, and check for any firmware updates through the app's interface.
- Check Connectivity: Ensure that your printer is connected to your computer properly via USB. Sometimes, issues can arise if the connection isn't stable.
- HP Support Assistant: Install and use the HP Support Assistant software. It can help diagnose and resolve many common printer issues, including firmware updates. It's available for download from HP's website
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Dear @Rachel571, thank you for your help.
1. I verified the compatibility. It is compatible.
2. I tried running usblist2.exe as an administrator with the HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw connected to my computer via USB. After clicking Yes on the pop up "do you want this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?" nothing further happens (as experienced before).
3. HP Smart App does not have a button called "check for firmware updates". I ran "Diagnose and Fix" and it reports that no issues were found. Yet, I know that there is new firmware (version V3.82.01.16) which is newer than the current version V3.82.01.12, and I still want the new firmware.
4. USB is stable (it is the cable provided with the printer by HP!)
5. I tried the HP Support Assistance app. There is no button for firmware updates. I ran Diagnose Any Printer Issues. I selected the USB-connected version of the printer. After a while, a pretty long time though, it says "everything checks out okay with your product". It did not install new firmware. But I want the new firmware.
Concluding: unfortunately, NOTHING works (so far). Would you have other ideas?
