The HP Smart app sometimes and unpredictably, does not connect through my secure domestic WiFi net to my HP  Notebook (see below) for scanning or printing, and both the app and the printer refuse to perform what is expected. Sometimes, however,  they pair properly and effectively without intervention - more frequently, they do not.

So far over a period of a couple of months since purchasing the printer, I have only been able to use scanning and printing facilities with this combination a few times. It is very frustrating.

Throughout this time, the printer has reported successful connection to the WiFi net, on each and every occasion.

I never had this issue with a Canon Pixma printer/scanner connected through the same WiFi net, before I had to replace it through old-age. Naively perhaps, I hoped that choosing the same manufacturer for the PC and the printer would make the partnership reliable (!).

Please provide guidance ASAP to resolve this very irritating issue.

PS. I am running Windows 10 v22H2, 19045.6691 on an HP 250 G5 Notebook PC.

Hi @David_EPWC,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP DeskJet 2810e has an intermittent Wi-Fi connection to your HP 250 G5 notebook, making scanning and printing unreliable, even though the printer reports a successful network connection. Let’s go through HP-focused troubleshooting steps to improve connectivity.

Restart printer and Wi-Fi router
Turn off the printer and unplug it from power for 60 seconds.
Restart your Wi-Fi router to clear temporary network issues. Then power on the printer and notebook.

Confirm printer and PC are on the same network
Check that both the printer and your HP notebook are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (SSID).
Avoid guest networks or 5 GHz/2.4 GHz mismatches—DeskJet printers sometimes have issues with 5 GHz-only networks.

Use the HP Smart app to reconnect
Open the HP Smart app and go to Printer Setup > Wireless Setup Wizard.
Reconnect the printer to the Wi-Fi network, entering the password carefully.

Assign a static IP to the printer
Sometimes the printer’s dynamic IP changes, causing the app to lose connection.
Use EWS (Embedded Web Server) via the printer’s IP to assign a static IP in your router’s DHCP settings.

Check firewall or antivirus settings
Windows Defender Firewall or third-party antivirus can block HP Smart app connections.
Temporarily disable firewall/antivirus and test printing/scanning.

Update firmware and drivers
Use the HP Smart app or HP Support website to install the latest firmware for the DeskJet 2810e and ensure Windows 10 drivers are current.

Reset the printer network settings
On the printer, press and hold Wireless + Cancel buttons (check manual for exact combination) to reset the network configuration.
Reconnect the printer fresh to your Wi-Fi network.

Test scanning and printing
After reconnecting, try scanning and printing from HP Smart and from Windows Devices & Printers to verify both work reliably.

I hope this helps.
