Just to clarify when you say uninstall and reinstall do mean remove and add using Devices and Printers or do I need to uninstall /reinstall everything as per your initial answer?

Having repeated the procedure again I finally managed to get to get the scan function working. Thanks very much for the laying out the procedure so clearly.

Although when I run Scan Doctor I get HP Scan error which doesn't go away even after clicking on Install Software. But as I've installed Scan Extender which I prefer works perfectly.
