I followed instructions to install my new 7975 printer using HP smart. It totally failed. HP's AI was worthless. I used Claude to walk through the process of downloading drivers from HP and installing them. Adding the printer manually and finally going into my router and making sure that it had a fixed ip address reserved for the printer. It was a lot of work. Not a straight forward installation at all. I also had an old HP printer, 5660 which i had to remove and was replacing. That printer was dropping it wifi connection too frequently. Hopefully this setup will be more stable. I am not impressed with HP (not so) Smart. Good luck on your installations.

Congratulations. That took some real persistence, and HP didn't make it easy.
For the record, here's what was wrong: something on your PC was blocking automatic printer discovery, so HP Smart and Windows kept setting up a printer they couldn't actually reach. Installing HP's full software and connecting by IP address got around that, and reserving the address in eero keeps it working.
One last check: open Word, go to File → Print, and make sure the new HP Envy 7900 is selected (not "Unable to Connect"). Then you're all set.

Hi @rkoby
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thank you for sharing the detailed update. We understand that getting the HP ENVY 7975 working with your Windows computer took considerably more manual setup than expected, particularly after replacing the older HP ENVY 5660.
It is good to hear that you were ultimately able to get the printer installed and printing. Setting a reserved IP address for the printer also gives you a clear configuration to work with going forward.
One small clarification for future readers: HP Smart has been replaced by the HP app on supported platforms, so current setup guidance may look different from the process you originally followed.
We appreciate you taking the time to document what worked for you. Sharing the final setup may be helpful to others working through a similar printer installation.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
Regards,
