MacBook Pro does not recognize my HP LaserJet 1022 after its OS was recently reinstalled. I've downloaded the latest driver from the HP site, but suspect it's not the right driver  since the printer is ~15 years old.  I'd like to keep the printer as it works very well.

Try this set/order below to get up and running again:

Use the HP Uninstaller: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02440673
If you still have a folder marked HP, delete it (likely here: /Library/Printers/hp ).

Use Easy Start ( https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-easy-start/7376041  - make sure your OS is correct) and see if your printer is supported. If not, or this doesn't solve the issue,  move on to the next steps.

Uninstall your printer USING THIS METHOD ONLY (NOT EASY START, NOT EASY ADMIN): Apple Logo (Upper Left of Screen)/System Preferences/Printers & Scanners. Then restart your computer.

See if you can print. If not, continue:
Download (and install) this package (From HP FTP) which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen...
If the link comes up blank, try right/control clicking and saving it. Or right/control click and copy link, and paste into browser bar. If you get the malware warning part-way through the installation, go to System Preferences>Security & Privacy where you can tick a box and unblock the HP option.

The install takes a bit. Let it run, even if it seems like it stalled out! When it completes, restart.

Then reinstall your printer using: Apple Logo (Upper Left of Screen)/System Preferences/Printers & Scanners, and use the default drivers. If drivers do not show up, download and install the 5.1 driver package from here: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US . Then restart your computer.

I'm on macOS 11 Big Sur.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen...

This doesn't install HP Laserjet 1020 nor HP Laserjet 1022 printer drivers for macOS 11 Big Sur.

When mounting the drivers downloaded here https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US

I get: "This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.", most likely because I'm on macOS 11, not max OS X.

After uninstalling previous HP Laserjet 1022 driver, I'm left with no supported drivers and can no longer use my HP LaserJet 1020 printer.

I have the same problem with my HP Laserjet P1102.   I've uninstalled all previous driver and tried to install the current one on the HP support site according to HP's instructions.  But I have the follow error message and can no longer use my printer.   I'm on macOS Big Sur.

I apologize that this has not been responded to for quite some time. I am a volunteer and was very sick, but I'm surprised someone else didn't jump in!

If this is still and issue, here's what I'd try:

While your printer isn't directly supported, there is a workaround using GutenPrint-
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/Hp-laserjet-1020-driver-for-mac-Big-Sur...

Also might check if there's a compatible driver here: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/ASU/ by trying both the Easy Start app and the PrinterDriver.pkg and seeing if it will install for you.

Give that a shot!

The HP Laserjet 1022 driver used for my HP Laserjet 1020 available in PrinterDriver.pkg  at ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/ASU/ solved my problem, thank you!

Note, I tried the Gutenprint solution first and that did not work for HP Laserjet 1020 using HP Laserjet 1022 driver.

**IT WORKed for ME TOO.**

First, download HP Easy Admin into your MACBOOK.

https://support.hp.com/ph-en/document/c06164609#three_SolutionDownload

Secondly, browsing HP LaserJet 1022n in the Search column.

Third, download the Essential Software in the searching result.

Lastly, go to MACBOOK Finder seach for Printer & Scanner   ADD a new printer in settings, choose drivers for the list for HP Laserjet 1022, 1.6.1.

TRY  to  print out your Doc.

I'm on MacOS is BigSur 11.1

I tried all methods above and restarted my Macbook for 5 hours. Finally, I solved it.
