Is Google now blocking HP Smart?  I had removed the shortcut/connection to HP Smart, but now, when I try to add it again, I am presented with a message that Google has blocked the app.

Has anyone else experienced this and been able to find a way around it?  Setting an app-specific password doesn't work in this case.

Welcome to the HP English Community --

Google might take exception to anything.

In general, and depending on your device (computer, tablet. phone), Google is more -- or possibly less -- inclined to find fault with one or another of the applications you want to install and run.

Typically, the governing Operating System and your device security must allow an application to install and run on your device (computer, tablet, phone).  HP Smart is not an exception to this rule.  The device and Operating System must be willing to accept and host the application.

Check your browser for updates - pending updates can muddy the waters (result in odd errors).

and / or

Perhaps restart everything involved - device (computer, tablet, phone), possibly your network

----------------------------------------------------------

Obscure - likely not the issue - FYI only

One of the features in HP Smart are Cloud Storage save options that can be created in HP Smart Shortcuts.

It is necessary that the Cloud Storage destination account be signed-in when accessed by a Shortcut created for "Save".

If you don't know what that is, you are not likely using HP Smart Shortcuts -- or perhaps my attempt to describe the feature in few words is just sorely lacking.

----------------------------------------------------------

Complete Side Bar - FYI ONLY

I've had issues today with Google's Mail - connection disruptions and the like - quite unusual and probably not related to your situation.

Still, any disruption at all is odd and possibly worth mentioning in the context of sudden and unexpected "blocking" issues.

Signing out, reloading the website, and signing into the mail service again seems to have quelled the issues for the moment.

Thanks for the reply.  A few more data points.

1) This is an HP Shortcut... I can create new connections to Dropbox and Box without issue, but not Google Drive.

2) I've tried two different Google accounts (one workspace account the other g-mail), the same error occurs at all times.

3) Two different devices have been tried on two distinct internet connections; all deliver the same error.

4) Everything is up to date.

Same error on iOS...

Not sure - I cannot duplicate the error.

That makes testing all the more difficult on my side.

I just now tested access via HP Smart using a Shortcut to save an image to one of the sub-folders in my Google Drive account.  Works, as does signing into Google Drive using a browser.

Perhaps sign into Google Drive using your browser - check the destination folders.

Select "Folders" > Select (single click) on a Folder > on the Right side, Check Details

If I think of anything else, I will post back.

This doens't appear to be a Google drive issue as I am in there all day every day for work and I have no such issues using Google drive.

Thanks for trying, but I am not sure that is a completely valid test.  To recreate this, you would need to delete your existing connection to Google Drive and reauthenticate to authorize a new connection, but please don't try that as I don't want you to be in the same situation I am in.

I'll try a few more things and report back if I make any progress.

You are welcome.

"Yeah, but..."

Sure - you are the best qualified to decide whether a test is worth your time.

I cannot duplicate the issue -- my perspective is less clear on the subject than is your own, I think.

Yes, there is every chance that I've missed something.

HP Smart - application - General solutions for a misbehaving app -

  • Reset the application (instructions included below)
  • If that is not enough, follow up with uninstalling the app > Restart  > Install app

Whether that works is questionable - there are files, libraries, and hooks elsewhere in the system.

It is perhaps the case that the app is not at all blocking anything and that the permission issue is elsewhere.

What generally works for anything stuck in the Windows File System:

Reload Windows

Everyone universally hates that solution, sometimes vehemently so, with posted reasons and objections why it should not be necessary.  Consider it FYI only.

Windows - Reset HP Smart Application

Next,

Reset the HP Smart application - This action removes the app data.

How to...

Windows 10 -

Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

OR

Windows 11 -

Settings > Apps > Installed Apps

Next,

Search / Find HP Smart in the apps list

Open Advanced options > Reset the app

Restart the computer and log in

Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)

What if?

If the app Reset does not work by itself,

Next,

Uninstall the HP Smart App from Settings > Apps > Apps and Features / Installed Apps

Restart the computer and log in

“Get” a new copy of the HP Smart application from the Microsoft Store

Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)

Two Macs, same error on both, plus on my iOS devices as well.

Exactly.  That was what my original post was pointing toward; My guess is that Google is now blocking new connections from the HP Smart app because HP hasn't updated the app to conform to Google's latest security requirements.  Apparently, they've blocked it before.  I was trying to determine if anyone else had encountered this issue.

Edit:  It could be something that is only affecting NEW connections, and not impacting existing connections.

I am going to notify HP,  but I will probably just have to wait for an app update.

Interesting and could be true --

I've not heard of Google going to this extreme even with their fervent desire that we all use 2FA (2-step-verification).

2FA is generally required (along with an App Password) when one machine is signing into another.

I suppose it's possible that even while sitting in front of of your keyboard and screen, Google might want you to use an App Password when using Google Drive from within HP Smart.   Sounds like something both odd and reasonable at the same time.

If it is true that HP Smart has not kept up, it is also true that wide spread issues are generally caught by the development teams -- Problems are corrected as quickly as can be done.   That said, we do not have any visibility on internal HP processes.

Should I come across anything useful - something I missed or other information - I will post back.

App-specific passwords do not work in this case... I've tried, but Google is asking for full credentials.  As I mentioned in my first post, this worked previously and started when I tried to re-establish a connection/shortcut to Google drive after removing it a while back to debug a separate issue.

I tried reporting this to HP, but my warranty has expired, so they don't give me any options to contact them. I took to Twitter and sent a message to HP Support, but the responses back demonstrated a lack of understanding of what HP Smart is.  I'll keep trying.

The other thread I linked to is at least giving me some small indication that the issue is not specific to me.
