It is frustrating because I can't make any scans directly from the printer to the computer, as it tells me I must download and install HP Scanning Software first when I try to do so.

 

I tried this a couple of weeks ago and gave up after getting the "failed to install" error many times.  I was working with HP support, and they could not fix it either.  Laughably, HP referred me to a premium service they offer which they said had the best experts available to fix technical issues but then casually slipped in that there is also a cost to use them!  ha.  It is regretful that a brand-new laptop and brand-new printer have such issues.

 

I tried again today hoping that it would work with some drivers being updated, but it still doesn't work.

The Universal Scan software is both OS and printer model dependent.

The software is listed as supported for your device on Windows 11.

That said,

HP Universal Scan Software is not what you are looking for to work with "Scan to Computer".

No, I cannot explain why you would not be able to install the optional HP Universal Scan Software -

 

The Universal Scan Software, when supported, should be available as a self-contained standalone installation or can be installed after the full driver printer software.  Installation is supposed to be fairly straight forward.

 

The initial purchase of the printer would normally include a short time frame when Setup help is included in the printer Warranty -- No, I cannot explain why HP Support would pass you off and charge for extra service, though in truth, I've never used HP Support to help me install any software or setup on a new printer or other device.  ?  I will send off a note to our Moderator team -- I don't know whether we will hear back -- "we" are not HP Support proper.

What else?

- Network connection -

Do switch off any VPN connection before and during installation of any printer software.

Whether VPN works later is not something I can answer -- installation is NOT the time to have VPN switched on.

 

Mesh networks can also complicate tasks - I cannot provide any reasonable help for forcing an installation in a Mesh network setup.

Install Printer Software

 

The differences can between the full driver and the Universal Scan software are subtle but important.

 

The Full Solution software is the full driver printer software.

 

The full driver printer software is the software used with "Scan to Computer".

Details are included later in this message.

 

Reinstalling?

 

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.
  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

In general, the web pack should load -

Download package > Save > Right-Click on the installation Package > Run as Administrator

 

If / When asked, opt for the Full Driver / Full Software to be installed.

 

Using USB?  (Re)Connect when instructed to do so.

 

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

HP Universal Scan - Full Feature Software and Driver 

 

If asked, opt for the Full Driver to be installed.

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least one or more shortcuts to the Desktop.

 

 Note Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are dependent on printer model and supported software options.

 

  • Printer Assistant – Where still supported as part of the full driver printer software
  • HP Scan Assistant – For those printers that no longer provide the Printer Assistant
  • HP Scan – Shortcut on Desktop named for the printer model
  • When installed, HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self-named “HP Scan” shortcut
