HP5742
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

I have a HP5742 printer which seems to hang up all the time. It powers on ok, but after that the screen is completely unresponsive when I touch any of the buttons.

I have tried resetting the power supply several times, but it is exactly the same each time.

I have also tied accessing the support menu, but each time I get that far, it hangs up.

I have the printer plugged directly into the wall socket - ie it is not connected via a plug bank.

Any suggestions as to what I should do please?

@RossGAHenderson, Welcome to HP Support Community!

The only thing I can think of when the printer is powering on and not responsive is a reset and printer firmware update. Since the reset menu cannot be accessed, update the firmware.

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. For more information, go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.

If the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I've tried updating the firmware, but the printer serial number is greyed out and it says that the printer is up to date.

Somehow I managed to access the support menu and performed a partial-full reset. Once I managed this, it got so far, then hung up.

Any time I power it on, it just hangs up after a few seconds.

Any other suggestions?

I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue. This seems more like a hardware issue and the printer needs to be serviced.
