I am trying to set up a printer acquired from my daughter that she could not use because settings were grayed out. I have tried to reset to factory default through "HP Smart" but it does not change settings on printer screen. HP Smart says settings locked by whoever setup printer.

If restoring to factory default doesn't solve this issue what can I do?

Hi @Barbenae1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

When encountering locked settings on an HP OfficeJet 6968 printer, particularly if these restrictions were put in place by the initial setup, you can follow a series of steps to attempt to resolve the issue. Here are some actions you can try:

Restore Factory Defaults via the Printer Control Panel:

  • Ensure the printer is powered on.
  • From the Home screen on the printer's control panel, touch the setup icon (usually looks like a gear).
  • Scroll to find and select "Printer Maintenance" or "Self Maintenance."
  • Choose "Restore Factory Defaults" from the menu options.
  • Confirm the reset if prompted.

Resetting the Network Settings:

  • If the settings you are having trouble with pertain to network connectivity, you may also need to reset the network settings:
  • On the printer control panel, go to the Wireless menu or Settings menu.
  • Choose "Restore Network Defaults" and confirm.

Use HP App:

Firmware Update:

  • Ensure that the printer’s firmware is up to date Official HP® Support, as outdated firmware can sometimes result in unexpected functionality issues.

  • This can typically be done through the setup menu in the control panel, selecting "Preferences," "Printer Maintenance," and then "Update the Printer."

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
