My HP 7740 ADF has malfunction yet again. The scanner works fine in flatbed mode; multiple pages scan fine through the ADF when using HP Smart; when trying to scan pages direct through the ADF, pages are not processed and a blank image is sent via Windows Import Pictures functionality, which has never happened before.
I have deinstalled and reinstalled the HP software twice, to o avail. I have cleaned the ADF as per the instructions. No change. I have started and restarted printer and desktop multiple times; no change.
The last time this problem occurred HP replaced the printer for what turned out to be a software error, and I think this is too.
The HP 7740 is a lovely machine EXCEPT for this, and it will become landfill unless this gets resolved. Very frustrated.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Are you able to copy from the ADF? Is the Printer connected directly to the wall outlet?
Let's try a firmware update: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168
Change the scan settings with HP Printer Assistant.
-
Load the item on the scanner glass, in the document feeder slot, or in the automatic document feeder (ADF), depending on your printer type and features.
NOTE:
Do not load photos in the ADF to prevent damage to the photos and the printer.
-
Search Windows for your printer model, then click the printer name in the list of results.
HP Printer Assistant opens.
-
Click Scan, then click Scan a Document or Photo.
HP Scan opens.
-
Click one of the shortcuts that matches the file type and resulting action you want.
-
Change any of the shortcut default settings in the right side of the window, if necessary.
NOTE:
Available settings change depending on if you are scanning a document or photo. For example, the PDF File type is only available for document scans.
-
Select Show scan preview or Show Viewer After Scan to preview and make additional edits to the scan before saving it.
-
Click Advanced Settings or More to change settings such as quality, color, and default scan destination folder.
-
Click Scan.
The printer scans the item, then a preview of the scan displays in HP Scan.
-
If necessary, double-click the thumbnail image of the scanned item, then change any additional settings.
-
Click Save.
The Save as windows opens.
-
Select the folder you want to save the scan to, change the File name if necessary, confirm the file type in the Save as type menu, then click Save.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi Betty, thanks for this. Firmware is current and device is plugged direct to wall outlet. Yes, I can scan through the ADF via HP Smart, as you describe above. Bt that doesn't solve my problem, which is that I want to scan through the ADF while standing at the printer i.e. initiate a multipage scan from the device; this could do as recently as a couple of weeks ago. I simply want this to work as was claimed when I bought it in the first place.
I think this might be a clash between Microsoft WSD (Web Servives on Devices) and conventional IP addressing. This only because HP Print and SCan Doctor claims everything is OK on testing, but then cannot find the device at all to refresh it. Also some HP apps think the device is on 192.168.0.10, but my DHCP managers shows that IP address as blank, nothing connected to it. And the printer is not set to a static IP address.
So no progress.

Time to make this more complicated. We have three desktops on our little network; the ADF scanner works fine on two of them, just not on the one it most needs to work on. All up to date Windows, 10 Version 1909.

Since it works fine on the other desktops, it's not a hardware issue.
Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:
