I have been trying for two days to set this dang printer up. It is used and I factory reset it at least two times. I have followed every direction to get it set up and NOTHING WORKS! I'm beyond frustrated to get this thing to work. What else is there to do? I have an HP Chromebook so one would think it would be easy to setup. I have tried setting it up from my phone. What the hell am I doing wrong? I can't even print a basic paper from this printer!

Hi @kjmorrison, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I get your frustration—setting up a printer should not be this hard, especially with an HP Chromebook. Let’s break it down and see where things might be going wrong.
Steps to Try:
Factory Reset Confirmation
Since you already reset it, let’s make sure it's at the initial setup screen. If not:
- Reset Again: On the printer, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
Check Printer’s Wi-Fi Connection
- If the printer is not connected to Wi-Fi, it won’t work properly.
- On the printer, navigate to Wi-Fi Settings and try reconnecting to your network manually.
- If it keeps failing, try turning off the router for 5 minutes, restart the printer, and retry the connection.
Use HP Smart (But Bypass Setup Issues)
- On your HP Chromebook, open the HP Smart Web App.
- If it fails to detect the printer, skip setup and try adding it manually using the IP address.
- Find the IP on the printer’s Wireless Summary or Settings > Network > Wi-Fi Status.
- Open Chrome, go to chrome://os-settings, then Printers > Add Printer and enter the IP.
Enable Wi-Fi Direct for Direct Printing
- If the Wi-Fi setup isn’t working, try Wi-Fi Direct:
- On the printer, go to Wi-Fi Direct Settings and enable it.
- On your Chromebook, connect to the printer’s Wi-Fi network (it should be named something like "DIRECT-HP-8025e").
- Then, try printing a test page.
Remove HP+ Requirement
- Since it’s a used printer, HP Smart might be blocking you because it's expecting HP+ activation.
- If prompted for HP+ setup, try skipping or selecting “Set up later.”
- If setup forces HP Smart and gets stuck, let me know—I can guide you through bypassing it.
USB Printing (as a last resort)
- If Wi-Fi setup fails, connect the printer to your Chromebook via USB.
- Go to Chrome OS Settings > Printers > Add a Printer and check if it’s detected.
- If detected, select HP OfficeJet Pro 8025e, and try printing.
