WHAT IS PURPOSE?  User guide doesn't explain.  Actually, user guide indicates the power button is on top in error when it is  on front of printer,

Hi @ohrw03 

 

Probably that is a sensor for ADF - Automatic Document Feeder, when you are using ADF for making copies, to check the upper lid is close.

Thank you so much.That makes so much sense. but I just didn't take time to think about it. Now I can explain it to a 5 year old.
