Hi @IXXIGolfer

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with a brand‑new printer freezing on the Firmware Update screen. When a device gets stuck there, it can feel unsettling, especially when you’re eager to start using it. I’ll guide you through clear, steady steps to bring it back to life and help you complete the update smoothly.

Below are the safest ways to get the printer out of that frozen screen and finish the update.

1) Getting the printer out of the Firmware Update screen

Try these steps in order. Each one gently forces the printer to restart without harming the hardware.

Step 1: Power reset

This helps clear any temporary freeze.

  1. Keep the printer powered on.
  2. Disconnect the power cable from the rear of the printer.
  3. Disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet as well.
  4. Wait for about 60 seconds so the internal power fully drains.
  5. Plug the cable back into the wall outlet first.
  6. Plug it back into the printer and let it start up.

If the screen comes back normally, you’re out of the loop.

Step 2: Try a forced restart

If the screen still shows the Firmware Update message:

  1. Press and hold the Power button for 10–15 seconds.
  2. Release it and allow the printer to restart.

Step 3: Remove any USB cable

If a USB cable is connected, unplug it and restart the printer again.
Sometimes the printer waits for a firmware file from USB and gets stuck.

2) Completing the Firmware Update

Once the printer boots normally, you can complete the update in a clean, controlled way.

Option A: Update using the HP App on Windows

This is the most stable method.

  1. Open the HP App on your Windows PC.
  2. Select your printer.
  3. Go to the Settings or Printer Information section.
  4. Look for Firmware or Printer Update.
  5. Start the update and let the printer stay powered on until it finishes.

Option B: Update using the printer’s touchscreen

If the printer loads to the home screen:

  1. Open the Setup or Settings menu.
  2. Go to Printer Maintenance or Printer Update.
  3. Select Check for Updates.
  4. Allow the update to complete without touching any buttons.

Option C: Update using USB (only if the printer requests it)

If the printer specifically asks for a USB firmware file:

  1. Download the firmware file on your Windows PC.
  2. Copy it to a USB flash drive (FAT32 format).
  3. Insert the USB drive into the printer.
  4. Follow the on‑screen steps to complete the update.

If the printer still stays stuck

If after the power reset and forced restart the screen remains frozen on the update page, it means the update didn’t load correctly and the printer is waiting for a fresh attempt. In that case, repeat the power reset once more and then try updating through the HP App as soon as it reaches the home screen.

If you want, you can tell me exactly what the screen shows now—whether it’s a progress bar, a message, or a blank update screen—and I’ll guide you step by step from there.
