HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Brand new HP 8135e. Cartridge Problem error on setup. "(K) cartridge not communicating correctly with the printer". Replacing the cartridge that came in the box with a new cartridge gives me a "Use SETUP Cartridge" error. Help! I'm in an endless loop of errors.

Hi @isdfugb,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printers set up cartridges!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

As your HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e is stuck in a cartridge error loop, try these steps:

Use the Correct "SETUP" Cartridges

  • HP requires SETUP cartridges for the first-time setup.
  • Check if you are using the original cartridges that came with the printer.

Reseat the Black (K) Cartridge

  • Open the printer cover and remove the black cartridge (K).
  • Gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and printer with a dry lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert it firmly and close the cover.

Restart the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from power for 1-2 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

Reset the Printer

  • Open the printer menu → Select Settings → Restore Defaults → Reset.

Update Printer Firmware

  • If possible, update the firmware using the HP Smart App or from HP Support.

Let me know if you need more help! 😊

I tried all of these suggestions, to no avail. The printer error is occurring during initial setup, possibly due to a defective setup cartridge (k)?, so I am unable to reach the Settings menu or update firmware.

I have the same issue with setting up my new HP Officejet Pro 8130e and can't get past the Cyan Cartridge not communicating issue. I've updated the firmware, as well. Would like to be sent Reset instructions to bypass the setup error and reinitialize the printer. Your help would be appreciated.  Thanks DT
