I've downloaded the newest HP App onto my iMac. Previously I used HP Smart with no bad issues... it worked fine. The new HP App gives a message that "No available printers are found." Yet, the printer is connected and when I send a document to it from the computer, printing begins immediately and has no issues. But scanning requires the use of the app and so scanning is impossible because the App doesn't find the HP printer/scanner. I've tried contacting HP support and get no real help whatsoever. They tell me that it's an Apple problem. I don't believe that. Can anyone assist me? Thank you.

Make sure you have an HP account and that the HP App can log into your account.

that being said ---

You can bypass the HP app and scan right now using built-in Mac tools or fix the app connection by trying Image Capture, Printers & Scanners settings, or re-adding the printer.
Printing works because basic macOS print drivers only need a one-way street, but scanning requires two-way communication that the new HP app fails to detect.

Immediate Workaround (Built-in Mac Scanning)

  • Open the Apple menu and select System Settings (or System Preferences).
  • Click Printers & Scanners, then select your HP printer from the list.
  • Click Open Scanner to scan your documents directly without needing the HP app.
  • Alternatively, press Command + Space to open Spotlight, type Image Capture, and select your scanner from that app.

Fixing the HP App Connection

  • Remove and Re-add: Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners, click your HP printer, and remove it using the minus (-) button. Restart your iMac, then click Add Printer to reconnect it cleanly.
  • Check Local Network/Firewall: Ensure your iMac is not on a VPN and check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Firewall to make sure macOS isn't blocking the HP app from finding local network devices.
  • Clean Reinstall: Drag the HP app from your Applications folder to the Trash, restart your iMac, and download a fresh copy from 123.hp.com or the Mac App Store.
