Hi, the HP-printer not able to update the firmware. why? It shows a "material problem" because of the new HP-toner sets (2025 produced) are to new for the firmware (2019). I tryed to update the firmware (via WLAN, via USB cable) but it doesn't work because of the material error. So the problem ist: Not update because of toner error und toner error because of no firmware update. What can I do?

Hi @JoergBodo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw is showing a “material problem” with new 2025 toner cartridges, and you’re unable to update the firmware because the printer blocks the process due to the toner error. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and how you can work around it.

Remove the new toner cartridges

Power off the printer and carefully remove all four toner cartridges.

This clears the “material problem” state so the printer can start without blocking updates.

Restart the printer without cartridges

Turn the printer back on with no cartridges installed.

The printer should boot into a basic state that allows firmware updates.

Update firmware using USB or HP Smart app

Connect the printer directly to your PC with a USB cable.

Download the latest firmware package for the M283fdw from HP’s support site and run the update.

Updating without cartridges installed avoids the error loop.

Reinstall the new toner cartridges after update

Once the firmware update completes, power off the printer.

Reinstall the 2025-produced toner cartridges and power back on.

The updated firmware should now recognize them correctly.

Check firmware version

On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup → Reports → Printer Status Report.

Confirm the firmware date is current (2025 release).

If update still fails

Try updating via the Embedded Web Server (EWS): open a browser, enter the printer’s IP address, and go to Firmware Update.

This method sometimes bypasses cartridge-related blocks.

Prevent future issues

Keep firmware updated regularly, especially when using newly manufactured toner sets.

HP often releases updates to ensure compatibility with newer cartridge batches.

I hope this helps.
