When I try to do settings on my printer it keeps asking me for a password.  If I try to reset the printer to defaults it again asks me for a password.  What is the default password for printer configuration and if that does now work how would I reset this password?  (This is not the wifi password)  There is nothing in the manual about how to do this.

Hi @helpmeplease567,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Color LaserJet Pro M182 printer is asking for a configuration password and you don't have it or don't remember setting one, you can try the following steps to reset it.

Default Passwords:

  • Sometimes, HP printers use default passwords like "admin" or a blank password. Try entering these if you haven't set a custom password.

Perform a Cold Reset:

  • A cold reset will reset all settings to factory defaults, including the password. Here’s how to do it:
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Press and hold the Resume button (or Cancel button) while turning on the printer.
    • Continue to hold the button until all three LEDs (Attention, Ready, and Go) on the control panel are lit.
    • Release the button. The printer will perform a cold reset and then continue its power-on sequence.

Perform a NVRAM Initialization:

  • If a cold reset doesn't work, you can try an NVRAM initialization, which clears all settings including passwords. Be cautious as this resets everything:
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Press and hold the Resume button (or Cancel button) while turning on the printer.
    • Continue to hold the button until the LEDs above the Resume button blink. Then release the button.

After performing a reset, you'll need to set up the printer again, including any network settings and preferences.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
