HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdn
macOS 12.0 Monterey

The software showed there is a firmware update available, so I proceeded to update it.

However, during the update process, there was an error on the printer about failing to download.

The printer is frozen.  Power cycling it gives:

"A problem has occurred with one of the printer's critical system files. A printer update will be installed to fix this problem."

However nothing happens. Unplugging / replugging does not help. Same msg.

I opened a ticket over 24 hours ago but no response. I believe the printer is permanently damaged.

I now see many articles of a recent OffsetJet firmware upgrade bricking printers.  I wonder if a similar problem impacts LacerJet Pros, but bec these printers may be less popular, it hasn't been reported as widely.

Getting the impression that there is no fix short of finally getting a response from support which will likely involve shipping the printer back. Even if it's for free, where would I find a box?

Honestly, despite the printer being only 17 months old, I fear it's time to switch. The primary reason I was attracted by the firmware upgrade notification was that for the time I owned the printer, it freezes and needs rebooting so often that I was hoping the upgrade would fix it.

I have the exact same error.  Any suggestions on how to do a reset? I really don't want to buy another one as mine is also less than 17 months old.  Unfortunately, I still have some new toner cartridges.

Are your printers connected to the internet via wireless or wired? If wireless, you may have success in connecting directly to your internet router.

Appreciate your input!  It's actually connected to a guest wireless network (printer is in a shared office environment).  Unfortunately, I can't access any settings on the screen.  The unit appears to be bricked.
