When I print from my iPhone to this printer, it defaults to Tray 1 (manual feed). How do I set it to Tray 2 (which is full of paper)? I've looked in settings, but do not see a way to set the default paper tray (tray 2).
Unfortunately, adjusting the settings either on the printer itself or through the HP Smart app is unavailable on the HP LaserJet Pro 3301. Frustrating as this should be a basic printer control panel option. The suggested fix is perfect, it just does NOT exist. Any other solutions I should try?
From the printer control panel:
Paper Tray Options
- Manual Feed
- Size/Type prompt
- Paper Out actions
HP SmartApp (MacOS) = Option does not exist
Web Interface = Option does not exist
How do I complete this?

Hi @troutmleigh,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301 is defaulting to Tray 1 when printing from your iPhone and you can't find a way to set the default tray to Tray 2 in the settings, here are a few potential solutions you can try.
Change Printing Options from iPhone
When you initiate a print job from your iPhone, you should see an option for "Print Options" or "More Options" after you select your printer. Depending on the app you are using, this may allow you to select the paper tray.
- Open the document you want to print.
- Tap the Share icon (usually a box with an arrow).
- Select Print.
- Tap Select Printer and choose your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301.
- Before printing, look for an option like "Options" or "Printer Options" to select Tray 2 if it appears.
Change the Default Tray Using a Different Device
If you have access to a Windows PC or Mac, you may be able to change the default settings through the print driver.
On Windows:
- Go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel.
- Right-click on the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301 and select Printer Properties.
- Go to the Device Settings tab.
- Look for an option related to Paper Source or Default Tray, and change it to Tray 2.
On Mac:
- Open System Preferences and go to Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer and click Options & Supplies.
- Look for the Driver or Options tab and see if you can select Tray 2 as the default.
Update Printer Firmware
Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date, as sometimes updates can fix bugs and add new features.
- Visit the HP support website and enter your printer model.
- Check for firmware updates and follow the instructions to install them.
Use the HP Print Service Plugin
If you haven't already, consider using the HP Print Service Plugin for Android devices. While your issue is with an iPhone, this plugin may provide additional options for other devices.

Check App-Specific Settings
Some apps might have their own printing settings that override the system defaults. Check if the app you are using to print (e.g., Pages, Mail) has specific print settings that allow you to choose the paper tray.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alton, thank you for those suggestions. As a user that does a lot of email attachment printing from their iPhone, it’s rather frustrating to have to change the paper tray for every print job from a phone software side. As previously mentioned the MFP 3301 DOES NOT have a “printer properties” or “default settings”; not through windows settings, and not through the HP software settings, and not through the hardware printer settings. My firmware is up to date, my windows 11 is up to date. This is a HP issue that many other users including myself have requested an enhancement request for but based on my searches no solutions are found and the many community posts are being “archived” with No Solution. Please do not archive or close this out as resolved. Please push this to programming for an enhancement request!

Please advise how to change the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301 default tray selection to Tray 2 (which is more logical, as it is in front and more easily accessible). Isn't this possible to do from the MFP 3301 display screen?
My devices are all Apple products: iPhone 15, MacBook Air (M2 2023), iMac (2019), iPad Mini 2023. All my drivers and software are updated.
The directive described below for the Mac ("System preferences>>>Printers and Scanners>>>Options & Supplies") is outdated, and I cannot find any path to changing the paper tray default from my devices. (Note: Yes, I know I can manually change the tray each time I print via the print command of the specific applications, but I don't want to do this; I would just like to make Tray #2 the permanent default.)
Thank you!

Hi Mzrobbie,
Thank you for your response. However, it’s quite surprising that something so clearly essential has not been addressed yet. HP has not issued any patch, repair, or enhancement to resolve this issue. Tray 2 is the logical default as it's the primary paper tray. The bypass tray should not be set as the default, and there should be an option to adjust this, but no such setting exists on the device, app, or software.
Please, HP, address and fix this as soon as possible!
