I have an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw.  It has been a bit squirrely.  The most recent issue is that the Settings / Troubleshooting menu (in the control panel) locked itself -- the padlock icon suddenly appeared.    I didn't lock this.  It asked for a username/password to unlock.  I have not set any passwords or any users nor locked anything.  The only thing that has changed with the printer since I received it a few days ago is that the firmware was updated.  If anyone has some insight as to how this occurred and how to unlock, I would appreciate it.

Hi @kcarver,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the firmware update might have changed some settings or added default security measures that weren't present before.

Here's how you might resolve the issue:

Check Default Credentials: Sometimes, firmware updates set default credentials. Try the following:

  • Username: admin
  • Password: admin or 1234 or leave it blank

Reset to Factory Settings: If default credentials don’t work, you might need to reset the printer to its factory settings. Note that this will remove all custom settings:

  • Navigate to the Setup menu on the control panel.
  • Find the Service or Maintenance option.
  • Look for a Restore Defaults or Factory Reset option.

Access via Web Interface: You can also try accessing the printer’s settings via its web interface:

  • Ensure the printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
  • Open a web browser and enter the printer's IP address (you can find this on the printer’s control panel).
  • Log in using default credentials or any previously set admin credentials.

Firmware Update Reversion: If the issue started after a recent firmware update, consider reverting to the previous firmware version if possible. Update the firmware on an HP printer

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
