Hello together,

I just got some photo paper in 3.5 * 5 inches which is not supported by a default profile on my printer.

I only wan't to print smaller quick pictures on that.

In the meanwhile I get it managed to create a custom profile on my macbook in the printer profile with 3.5 * 5 or (88,7 mm * 127 mm). That was, however, only possible in the preview app. In no other app I found that option.

Then I took one sheet and inserted it in tray 1 and choosed custom size, because no other is by default available.

Print the job did only partly worked. The beginning of the picture was ok, but the last 2 cm have been not completely printed and my printer told me that there is a paper jam.

Am I doing something wrong?

Solution is always to power off/on the printer and have no full photos printed.

Thanks.

Hi @PhoenixDH

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

I'm really sorry your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3302 isn’t printing full photos on your custom 3.5 × 5 inch paper—it’s frustrating when the job starts well but ends with a jam and incomplete output. You’ve done a great job setting up the custom size and testing through Preview.

Let’s walk through a few adjustments that can help ensure smooth, complete printing.

Here’s what to check and try next:

1. Confirm tray 1 supports 3.5 × 5 inch paper

Tray 1 is the manual feed tray, and while it accepts custom sizes, it may have a minimum length requirement. If the paper is too short for the rollers to grip during duplex or final feed stages, it can trigger a jam.

2. Adjust print margins and scaling

If the image is printed too close to the edge, the printer may misinterpret it as a feed error.

  • In Preview, go to File > Print > Show Details
  • Set Scale to Fit and choose Fill Entire Paper
  • Ensure Margins are set to at least 6 mm on all sides
  • Avoid borderless printing on unsupported sizes

3. Use a supported app for custom sizes

Preview allows custom sizes, but other apps may not pass them correctly to the printer.

  • Stick with Preview or Photos for small-format printing
  • Avoid apps like Word or Safari unless the custom size appears in the paper list
  • If needed, create a custom paper size in System Settings > Printers & Scanners > Paper Size > Manage Custom Sizes

4. Feed one sheet at a time and align carefully

Manual feed trays can misread skewed paper as a jam.

  • Insert the photo paper gently and centered
  • Wait for the printer to detect the sheet before sending the job
  • Avoid pushing the paper too far into the tray

5. Disable duplex printing

If duplex is enabled, the printer may attempt to flip the short sheet, causing a jam.

  • In the print dialog, go to Layout > Two-Sided
  • Set it to Off or None
  • Print a single-sided photo and check if the full image appears

Let me know if the issue persists after adjusting the margins and disabling duplex. Once the paper is fully supported and the job is scaled correctly, your printer should deliver crisp, complete photos without interruption.

Thanks q lot for the reply. Maybe an issue not everybody is getting ...
I will try your solution next time when I have to print a picture.

Afterwards I will let you know about the output.

Working! But only in tray 1 and the margins of at least 6mm.

Thanks!

You are very Welcome @PhoenixDH

That’s wonderful to hear—and thank you so much for following up! I really appreciate the effort you put into testing the solution and confirming that it works with tray 1 and a minimum 6 mm margin.

I’m genuinely sorry for the earlier printing trouble and the paper jam frustration, but it’s great to know you now have a reliable way to print those quick 3.5 × 5 inch photos.

If you ever experiment with other apps or paper types and run into new quirks, I’ll be here to help you fine-tune the setup.

Your feedback helps others too, so thanks again for sharing your experience.

Stay fantastic, and have an amazing day ahead!
