COLOR LASERJET PRO M277dw
Microsoft Windows 11

The drivers for these printers are unable to be installed on Windows 11. The installer reaches 99%, then halts, stating that it has been running for too long and that a critical error has occured. I'm attempting this via the USB type B cable on the back of the printer. Wireless setup with the driver installer allows it to install, but the printer is unable to print with the printer that appears in the settings following this, and connecting the printer over USB didn't help.

Fixing HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw Driver Installation Failure on Windows 11

Follow these steps in order.

1. Remove the printer from Windows

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. If it is USB-connected, disconnect the USB cable from the printer.
  3. In Windows 11, from the taskbar search box, type and open Printers & scanners.
  4. Under Printers & scanners, find your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw.
  5. If it appears, select it and click Remove device, then click Yes.
  6. If it does not appear, continue to the next step.

2. Reinstall the built‑in Windows driver (wireless or network)

A. Check printer network connection

  1. Turn on the printer and wait until it is idle and silent.
  2. Make sure it is connected to your network:
    - For wireless: Wireless light on the control panel should be solid blue.
    - For Ethernet: Ethernet port light should be solid green with a blinking orange activity light.
  3. If it is not connected, reconnect it to your Wi‑Fi or Ethernet network from the printer’s Wireless/Network menus.

B. Add the printer in Windows (automatic)

  1. In Windows 11, search for and open Add a printer or scanner.
  2. Click Add device and wait while Windows searches.
  3. If your M277dw is found, select it and click Add device to complete installation.
  4. If it is not found, continue below.

C. Add the printer by IP address

  1. In Add a printer or scanner, under The printer that I want isn't listed, select Add manually.
  2. Select Add a printer using an IP address or hostname, then select Next.
  3. From Device type, choose Autodetect.
  4. Find the printer IP address:
    - On printers with a touchscreen/menu, open Wireless Summary or Network Settings to view the IP.
  5. Enter the IP address in the IP field and select Next.
  6. Follow the prompts to install the driver for your printer model.

3. Install via USB (if you use USB instead of network)

  1. In Windows, search for and open Change device installation settings and make sure Yes is selected.
  2. Turn on the printer.
  3. Connect the USB cable to the printer, then to the PC.
  4. If a Found new hardware message appears, follow the prompts.
  5. Test printing; if it works, the driver installed successfully.
  6. If you still cannot print:
  7. Open Add a printer or scanner again.
  8. Click Add device and wait; if your printer appears, select it and click Add device.
  9. If it does not appear, select The printer that I want isn't listed → Add manually.
  10. Choose Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings, then click Next.
  11. In Choose a printer port, select Use an existing port, choose USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB), and click Next.
  12. Follow the remaining prompts to complete driver installation.

4. (Optional) Use HP software installer

If you prefer HP’s installer instead of only the Windows built‑in driver:

  1. On a computer with internet access, open a browser and go to 123.hp.com/laserjet.
  2. Download the software/driver package for the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw.
  3. Run the downloaded file and follow the on‑screen steps to complete installation.
