Hi @APPCON
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP Color LaserJet 5M is an older printer that was designed for use with older operating systems, and it does not natively have drivers for newer versions of Windows (like Windows 10 or Windows 10 Pro 64-bit). However, there are a few potential solutions to get it working on your Windows 10 system over TCP/IP (network connection) or USB.
Solutions to Make the HP Color LaserJet 5M Work with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
1. Install HP LaserJet 5M Drivers Using Compatibility Mode
Windows 10 often has compatibility features that allow older drivers designed for previous versions of Windows to be installed. Here's how to do it:
Download the HP LaserJet 5M Driver:
- Visit the HP website and search for HP Color LaserJet 5M drivers. Although HP may not have an official driver for Windows 10, you can find the Windows 7/8 or XP/Vista drivers.
- Alternatively, you can use the HP LaserJet 5P or HP LaserJet 6P drivers, which are very similar to the 5M model.
Install the Driver in Compatibility Mode:
- Right-click on the driver setup file you downloaded and select Properties.
- Go to the Compatibility tab.
- Check the box labeled Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows 7 or Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the dropdown list.
- Click Apply, then OK.
Run the Installer: Now, run the installer as usual and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. The printer should now appear in your list of printers.
Test the Printer: Once the driver is installed, you can test the printer by printing a test page or document.
2. Use Windows Built-In Drivers
In many cases, Windows 10 can automatically detect and install generic drivers for older printers. Here's how to try that:
- Go to Settings:
- Open Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Add Printer:
- Click on Add a printer or scanner.
- Wait for Windows to search for available printers.
- Select Your Printer:
- If your printer appears in the list, select it and follow the prompts to install the driver.
- Try Generic PCL6 or PostScript Driver:
- If your printer does not show up automatically, try selecting Generic PCL6 Printer or PostScript Printer from the list of available drivers.
- These are basic drivers that might work with your HP LaserJet 5M.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
