I have a Windows 10 Home machine to which MFP M277dw is installed using USB connection. I have it for about few months now but suddenly today, the system failed to recognize the printer. So I tried to update the drivers from HP site via HP support assist. The driver downloads and tries to install but after 99% (at least thats what it says) installation completed, the system hangs for about 15-20 minutes and comes back with a fata error message. The message wants me to restart the computer and retry. I did that few times to no avail.
My printer is hard wired only to one PC and is not connected wirelessly with any other device.
Any help is appreciated.

Hello @MANCHHI, Hope you are well!
Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a dynamite location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others.
I understand you got a fatal error while installing the printer. Try the below-mentioned steps and check:
- First, unplug the USB cable from the printer & PC.
- Go to control panel – Programs and features – Select all HP printer entries and uninstall them.
- Go to control panel – Devices and printers – Select each of the printer entries and then select remove printer / device.
- Now press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
- Now restart your computer.
- Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.
- Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.
- Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.
- Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.
- Now go to http://hp.care/2dHmvpy and download and install the correct full feature drivers.
- Only connect the USB cable when prompted.
Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome 🙂
Good Luck!

Hi DVortex,
Thank you for responding to my question. While you responded to my question, I had an opportunity to call HP support directly and was helped out by a very nice gentleman. Essentially, we followed the same procedure you have described here and that indeed resolve the issue.
Thank you once again.

I
basically have the exact same problem described and tried your fix, but I am unable to delete the printer as a device and I cannot delete the print driver under print server properties because it says that the driver is in use.
So, I am basically stuck.
Do you have any additional suggestions? I am about ready to contact HP support.

The suggestion did not go well.
The printer icon in devices and printers is transparent and after stopping the print spooler it could be deleted. However when I follow the driver removal instruction and run printui.exe /s there are no drivers available to to delete because the spooler is not running.
Although I was able to delete most items in the Hewlett-Packard folder except for Hewlet-Packard\HP Ceement folder because I was denied permission to access this folder.
I am not sure why I do not ahve administrative priveledges since I never set up accounts on this computer?!
When I reboot the transparent printer icon reappears that I again cannot delete. It is a vicious circle.
I even tried it twice.
Any other suggestions?

Thank you for the reply and performing all troubleshooting steps.
Thank you for letting me know that you do not have administrator control over the computer.
I recommend you to create a new account on your computer with admin rights, then try to uninstall and reinstall the printer.
Let me know how it goes:)

Hi, I have the same problem on Windows 7. I have followed the manual steps above, to no avail. The installer times out at around 30 minutes into the "Connect the Product" stage. I have been through the process five times. Sometimes I notice that not all of the drivers have installed before the time out, although they do install eventually. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to restart the package installer at the next step. I have spent half a day on this. Please help!
