HP DeskJet 3636
macOS 10.14 Mojave

So I got this printer from a member of society, who gave it away for free. It should be fully functional, but I can't figure out, how to set it up, so I can print from my computer.

I started downloading driver and firmware for the printer, but when I reach the search section, where the setup is searching for the printer, nothing comes up. I've tried this with the Wireless button on, the Wi-fi Direct button on and the HP ePrint button on, all three separately and together.

I find that specific when I have the Wi-fi Direct turned on, an option in my Wifi network options comes up called Direct-73-HP DeskJet 3630 series, but I need a password to connect, which I do not have. This I would like to bypass if anyone knows how to?

I've tried the printer program, at my macOS Mojave, but nothing is detected.

I've too read a lot of manuals about setup, connection issues etc. about the specific printer and in general, but although I have followed the steps, it was without any luck.

I don't care how I connect to the printer at the moment, but I believe the Wi-fi Direct option suits me best if I only could make it function.

I believe there is a USB option at the printer, but it looks like some kind of old USB-cable I've never owned before.

I hope someone has some insights that may help me out.

Kind regards Jonas

A warm welcome to HP Support Community!
The Wi-Fi direct password should be available on the Wi-Fi Direct information report. Let's try these steps:

1.) On your printer control panel, check if the Wi-Fi Direct light and icon are on. If the Wi-Fi Direct light on the printer control panel keeps blinking, press the Wi-Fi Direct button once. The light will stop blinking and stay on.

2.) Press the Information button  to print a report that includes the Wi-Fi Direct name and password.

Refer steps below "Mac computers" from this document.

You may also use HP Smart App and and HP Auto wireless connect feature to connect the printer to your home wireless network. Here is how to do it:
1.) On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless button https://support.hp.com/doc-images/162/c02131772.gif and the Cancel button https://support.hp.com/doc-images/824/c01623874.gif at the same time for 5 seconds. (This step will restore default wireless settings on the printer and enable Auto Wireless connect. Immediately continue to the next step to install the software. You have approximately 120 minutes to complete the software setup using the HP auto wireless connect feature.)

2.) Download and run HP Easy start from here.

3.) Follow the onscreen instructions to connect the printer to your home wireless network.

Let me know how it goes!
