Hi, HP DeskJet2320 not printing from laptop.
Laptop does 'see' the printer in 'settings'.
DeskJet2320 DOES photocopy.
Message coming up on laptop about printer = Idle.Default.
This issue started after Apple Shop cleared my laptop and reinstalled all contents.
When I tried to contact HP.Support the HP Smart App does not recognise the serial number.
Help greatly appreciated, thank you.

@Bizzie200, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP DeskJet 2320 is properly detected by your laptop but is not responding to print commands after the Apple Shop reinstalled everything. Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve the issue:
Check Printer Connection
>Since your printer does photocopy, the hardware is fine. Let’s check the connection:
>If it's connected via USB, unplug and reconnect the cable.
>If it's a Wi-Fi or shared printer, ensure both the laptop and printer are on the same network.
Set Printer as Default
>Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners (Mac) or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners (Windows).
>Select your HP DeskJet 2320 and set it as Default Printer.
>If it appears offline, try removing and re-adding the printer.
Reset Printing System (Mac Only)
If you are using a Mac:
>Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
>Right-click anywhere in the Printers list and select Reset Printing System.
>Re-add the HP DeskJet 2320 and test a print job.
Reinstall HP Printer Drivers
Since your system was reset, reinstalling drivers may help:
For Windows:
>Download the latest driver from the HP website.
>Uninstall the existing printer software and reinstall it.
>Restart your computer.
For Mac:
>Delete the printer from Printers & Scanners.
>Download and install HP Easy Start from the HP website.
>Re-add the printer.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)
Download and install HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Run it to detect and fix any printer issues.
Check Print Queue
Open Printers & Scanners.
Click on HP DeskJet 2320 and select Open Print Queue.
Cancel any stuck print jobs and try printing again.
Test with Another Device
If possible, try printing from a different computer, phone, or tablet to check if the issue is with the laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Many thanks for your reaction. I have done exactly like you advised - selected the 'Reset Printing System' option - but unfortunately still no joy. After re-adding the HP DJ2320 still the same message: 'Idle. Default'.
I have tested the cables and USB, also bought a new cable and tried.
HP Customer service in the meantime has reacted, and advises... to buy a new printer. But I am worried this will not be the solution? (Plus, current printer hardly used). Grateful for any other tips, thank you

Trying to re-add printer via HP Smart App, this mention comes up 'Printer is either off line or not available'.
As mentioned before - the laptop 'sees' the printer. But: 'Idle'.
Apple has tested the laptop and finds no reason why it should not connect with printer. Referred me back to HP - HP referring me back to Apple now... AND advised to buy a new printer..

@Bizzie200, Thanks for clarifying that you have the HP DeskJet D2320 printer.
Thanks for clarifying that you have the HP DeskJet D2320 printer. Since it’s an older USB-only model, macOS might not have the correct drivers pre-installed. Let's try the following fixes:
1. Manually Install HP Printer Drivers for Mac
Since your Mac was reset, the default drivers might not be working. Try installing the correct drivers manually:
- Go to the official HP website:
🔗 HP DeskJet D2320 Drivers & Software - Search for "HP DeskJet D2320" and download the macOS driver.
- Install the driver and restart your Mac.
Please note this model supports upto Mac OS X 10.6
2. Manually Add Printer Using Correct Driver
After installing the driver, add the printer manually:
- Go to: Apple Menu → System Preferences → Printers & Scanners
- Click "+" to add a new printer.
- Select HP DeskJet D2320 from the list.
- Under Use, DO NOT select "AirPrint" or "Generic Printer".
- Instead, choose "HP DeskJet D2300 Series" (or whatever driver you installed).
- Click Add, then try printing.
3. Reset Mac Printing System
If it still shows "Idle", try resetting the macOS printing system:
- Go to: Apple Menu → System Preferences → Printers & Scanners
- Right-click (or Control-click) in the Printers List and select Reset Printing System.
- Restart your Mac and re-add the printer using Step 2 above.
4. Check CUPS Web Interface
CUPS is the macOS printing system. You can check the printer's status here:
- Open Safari and go to:
🔗 http://localhost:631/printers - Find HP DeskJet D2320 in the list.
- Click the printer name and check for error messages.
If it shows stopped, click Resume Printer and try printing again.
5. Test with a Different USB Port & Cable
Since the D2320 is USB-only, try:
✅ Using a different USB port on your Mac.
✅ Trying a new USB cable (even if the old one works for detection).
✅ If you’re using a USB-C to USB-A adapter, test with another adapter.
6. Test Printing from Terminal
If the printer is still idle, let's force it to print:
- Open Terminal (Search for "Terminal" in Spotlight).
- Type this command and press Enter: lpstat -p
- This will list all installed printers and their status.
- Now, try a test print:lp -d "HP_DeskJet_D2320" /etc/hosts
(Replace "HP_DeskJet_D2320" with the exact printer name from Step 2.)If the printer responds, it's a driver issue.
7. Test with Another Mac or Windows PC
If nothing works, try connecting the HP DeskJet D2320 to a Windows PC or another Mac.
- If it prints there, the issue is macOS-related.
- If not, the printer itself may need troubleshooting (like a reset).
Final Option: Try Generic HP Drivers
- Go to: System Preferences → Printers & Scanners
- Click "+" → Select your printer
- Under Use, choose "Generic PCL Printer" or "Generic PostScript Printer"
- Click Add and test print.
I hope this helps!
If my response resolves your issue, please click “Accepted Solution” to help others find the answer. Also, don’t forget to click the “Kudos/Thumbs Up” button to say thanks!
Take care and have a great day.

Hi, I saw your problem and decided to share how I made it to work on my Mac with iOS 15. I formulated my thoughts by using, so just follow steps:
Install Apple’s official HP printer drivers
Download from here (official website): https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888
(This is required — the needed driver won’t appear without it)Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
Right-click in the printer list and choose “Reset printing system”Plug in the printer via USB and click the + to add a new printer
When "HP DeskJet 2300 series" shows up, go to the bottom where it says “Use:”
Choose “Select Software…”
From the list, select “HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2540 All-in-One”
Click OK, then AddTry printing a test page — it should now work normally!
This works because the 2540 driver is compatible with the 2320 hardware, and HP hasn’t updated the 2320 driver for Sonoma yet.
I hope it will work for you as well!

Hi, Many thanks for your reaction and advice!
Looking at it now - on the support.apple.com/kb/DL1888 the mention comes up 'Not compatible with MacOs v.12 and newer', and 'System requirement Mac OS.14'. You did not find this to be an obstacle, for Sequioa 15?
Thank you again
