HP OfficeJet Pro 8210 Printer

I have an HP Deskjet Pro 8020 which I have managed to set up Wi-Fi and I can print from it. When I got it I could use the menu on the front panel in order to be able to set up Wi-Fi etc. I can print from it using Wi-Fi from my computer and any other devices connected to my network. The problem is this. I could not turn it off using the power button and had to turn it off from the wall as the screen was stuck saying it was initialising. I left this for a very long time and when I realised nothing was changing, I had to turn it off from the wall. Since then, it has been stuck showing the "Finish Setup Online" screen. I've already setup the app for android and signed in on the web version of the app. Nothing I can do will get rid of it. I can't click the done button. You can't factory reset it a) because you can't get to any other screen on the printer b) the app refused to factory reset because it thinks it is initialising. As I said I can actually print from it, it is just very, very annoying that I can't turn it off or use the printer menu. 

 

Are there a sequence of button presses I can use to override this, or is there some software I can use to force it to factory reset or get beyond this screen?

It sounds like your HP DeskJet Pro 8020 is stuck in an initialization loop, which prevents you from using the printer menu and performing a factory reset. 

 

While you are able to print, the front panel being stuck on the "Finish Setup Online" screen is understandably frustrating. Here are potential solutions you can try:

 

 

1. Attempt a Manual Reset with Button Sequence

HP printers often have hidden reset sequences that can resolve stubborn issues:

Basic Reset:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and the Cancel button at the same time for 5–10 seconds.
  3. Release the buttons and turn the printer back on to see if it exits the setup loop.

Advanced Reset:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and the Resume button simultaneously.
  3. While holding the buttons, reconnect the power cable.
  4. Keep holding the buttons until the printer lights or display changes.
  5. Release the buttons and check if the issue is resolved.

 

 

2. Force Factory Reset via Maintenance Mode

The printer may have a hidden maintenance mode:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold Power and Wireless (or Wi-Fi Direct) buttons simultaneously.
  3. Wait for the printer to power on and enter maintenance mode (this may not work on all models).
  4. Navigate through the maintenance menu using arrow keys to find the "Restore Factory Settings" option.

 

 

3. Update Firmware

A corrupted firmware can cause the printer to remain stuck in initialization:

  1. Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware for your printer model.
  2. Use the HP Smart app or connect the printer to your computer via USB to install the firmware.
  3. After updating, restart the printer and check if the initialization issue is resolved.

 

 

4. HP Smart App Diagnostics

  • Use the HP Smart App to run diagnostics on the printer:
    1. Open the app on your Android or computer.
    2. Select Printer Settings or Advanced Settings.
    3. Check for options like "Restore Factory Settings" or "Reset Printer."
    4. If the app refuses to perform the reset, reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi through the app and try again.

 

5. Clear Stuck Processes

  1. Disconnect the printer from Wi-Fi (either using the app or pressing the Wireless button until the light turns off).
  2. Turn off the printer and unplug all power cables for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Reconnect everything, turn on the printer, and see if the "Finish Setup Online" screen clears.

 

6. Hardware Diagnostic

  • Check for Sensor Issues:
    • Open the printer and verify that all components are properly seated (including cartridges, rollers, etc.).
    • Ensure no debris or dust is interfering with the setup process.
