Today, after a restart, I got a message that the trayapp.msi couldn't be located. By selectively turning off programs in my startup, I traced it to the HP Digital Imaging Monitor. After some difficulty, I managed to uninstall it, but now I can't find any way to reinstall it so that I can use my scanned and monitor ink levels, etc. Everything I try goes into a endless loop of frustration.

Hi @EddieRoundhouse,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re having a tough time getting the HP Digital Imaging Monitor back up and running. Here’s a step-by-step approach to reinstall it and get your printer functioning properly.
Download HP Software:
- Go to the HP Support website and search for your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer.
- Select your operating system and download the latest version of the HP Smart or HP Easy Start software. This package often includes the Digital Imaging Monitor and other essential utilities.
Run the Installer:
- Once the software is downloaded, run the installer. It should automatically include the Digital Imaging Monitor as part of the installation process.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Check for Updates:
- After installing, check for updates within the HP software. Sometimes updates are needed for the software to function correctly.
Reconfigure Your Printer:
- Open the HP software and follow the setup process to reconnect your printer. This will help in re-establishing communication between the software and the printer.
Restart Your Computer and Printer:
- After installation, restart both your computer and printer to ensure everything is working smoothly.
Check for Any Residual Files:
- If you still encounter issues, there might be residual files from the previous installation. Use a tool like CCleaner to remove these files, then try reinstalling the HP software again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
