HP ENVY 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

For the past couple of weeks my printer will not print in in duplex mode.

I have removed all HP software and reinstalled the driver package from:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/HP-ENVY-5540-All-in-One-Printer-series/54...

HP ENVY 5540 series Full Feature Software and Drivers

Type: Driver

Version: 40.11

Operating System:  Windows 10 (64-bit)

Release Date: Apr 24, 2017

File name: EN5540_Full_WebPack_1119.exe (148.7 MB)

When I check Printing Preferences > Printing Shortcut tab shows

Print on Both Sides Manually

When I check Printer Properties > General tab shows

Features

Color: Yes

Double-sided: Yes

Printer Properties > Device Settings tab show

HP ENVY 5540 series Device Settings

Installable options

Automatic Duplexing Unit: Not Installed (and greyed out - cannot change)

Photo Tray: Not Installed (and greyed out - cannot change)

Automatic Configuration: Off

If I change Automatic Configuration to Update Now and click Apply the Automatic Duplexing Unit will change to Installed for a few minutes then revert back to Not Installed an greyed out.

This seems like the printer and the driver are not communicating properly. The driver does not recognize the capabilities of the printer. This is strange since this is a standard feature of the printer, it is not an option.

Does anyone have an idea to fix this very frustrating problem.

@chip001

Please use instructions on page 25 of the following manual

Hello,

I followed the instructions in the manual but I do see the option "Print on Both Sides" in the Properties > Layout dialogue.

I have seen and used this drop down list in the past but it has now been replaced with a drop down list called "Print on Both Sides Manually" with the options for 'None',  'Flip on Long Edge' and 'Flip on Short Edge' which requires reloading the paper in the paper try to print the other side.

When I print a Printer Status report from the printer, in the Product Information section I see '10. Duplexer: Installed' but the driver does not seem to recognize it but the printer says it is there.

The duplexer is a standard feature of this model.

Still looking for an answer

I have the same problem as  Chip001. Although the layout setting is for flip on long edge, the automatic duplexing feature no longer works. Instead I get a prompt after the 1st is printed to manually insert the paper into the tray. I also am no longer able to print anything in color.

I have the same problem than Chip001

I have just found a work around that gets me duplex and colour printing again.

I have left the HP driver package installed on my computer.

I installed the printer on a TCP/IP port.

When I select the printer on the TCP/IP port I have the functionality that is missing from the HP Driver port.

I use the HP software for scanning and the TCP/IP port for all other printing.

It has been working like this for two days so far.

So my suggestion to everyone is install a new printer on a new TCP/IP port and see if that helps you.

Good Luck!

In a different topic "Duplex printing problem with Envy 5540" RichR49 posted a solution that worked for me.

Follow the instructions for removing the HP drivers from your computer device settings, device manager and software apps that relate to HP so you have no printer listed anywhere at all.

Don't download any drivers from the HP site.

Then go to settings, devices, and click +Add a printer or scanner button. Windows will find and install its own driver and you will be back with color and auto duplex printing. To scan, select scan on the printer itself and use the windows scan/fax app.

Hello Chip001, how do you install the printer on a TCP/ip port? Appreciate your help

start with this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4015386/windows-10-install-printer

select: To install or add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer

You will need to select the default Windows driver and select Add Device

In the Add Printer dialogue you can select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname > Next

Enter the IP address of the printer > Next

I am writing this from memory since I can not actually setup the printer, it is already setup.

This should setup a TCP/IP Printer Port in Windows and connect the printer IP address to the port.
