Hi @GP119,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I  understand your concern about how it can be when you’re trying to set up your printer and run into a roadblock like this.

Could you please confirm  if you’re seeing the WPS PIN prompt on your computer or mobile device during setup, or directly on the printer’s display.

Here are a few steps you can try :

  1. Check the printer’s control panel: On many HP printers, the WPS PIN is displayed on the printer’s screen when you attempt to connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Use the HP Smart app: Even without ink, you can still install the HP Smart app on your phone or computer. It often bypasses the need for a WPS PIN by guiding you through a direct Wi-Fi setup.
  3. Try the WPS button method: If your router has a physical WPS button, press it and then press the Wi-Fi button on your printer. This connects the printer without needing a PIN.
  4. Restart devices: Restart both your printer and Wi-Fi router, then retry the setup. Sometimes a fresh connection attempt resolves the issue.

You don’t need ink installed to connect your printer to Wi-Fi so we can definitely get this sorted out. Could you share whether your router has a WPS button, or if you’re specifically being asked for an 8-digit PIN?

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
