@lincoln-ray,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

In order to get a hard-wired HP Envy Inspire printer to work with a computer, you need to ensure the physical connection is detected and then install the correct software layer so Windows can communicate with it.

Step 1: Verify the Physical USB Connection:

  1. Ensure the printer is powered on and showing a stable light on its display panel.
  2. Unplug the USB cable from both the printer and the computer, then plug them back in firmly.
  3. Crucial: Plug the cable directly into a main USB port on the computer. Avoid using external USB hubs or keyboard pass-through ports, as they often fail to supply enough data bandwidth for printers.

Step 2: Use Windows Built-In Discovery:

Windows 11 can usually identify an HP Envy Inspire automatically once it is plugged in.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Printers & scanners, then open that setting.
  2. Click the Add a printer or scanner button at the top.
  3. Wait a few moments for Windows to scan the USB ports. If your HP Envy Inspire appears in the list, click on it and select Add device. Windows will automatically pull down a basic driver to get you printing right away.

Step 3: Install the Official HP Software Layer:

If Windows fails to see the printer or if you want to use the built-in scanner bed, you must install HP's modern universal printing application.

  1. Open a web browser on the computer and navigate to the official HP Smart App Platform or the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
  2. Download and install the HP Smart application (available directly through the Microsoft Store).
  3. Open the HP Smart app. It will immediately show a welcome screen asking to set up a new printer.
  4. Choose "Set Up a New Printer" and explicitly select the USB / Hard-Wired option when prompted (instead of Wireless/Wi-Fi).
  5. The application will automatically configure the correct print spooler settings and initialize the scanner utility.

Troubleshooting Quick Fixes:

  • Check the Cable Type: Ensure you are using a standard USB-A to USB-B printer cable (the square plug goes into the back of the printer, the flat plug goes into the PC).
  • The "Offline" Glitch: If the printer shows up but says "Offline", go back to Printers & Scanners, click the printer, open the Print Queue, click the Printer tab at the top left of the pop-up window, and ensure "Use Printer Offline" is unchecked.

Is your computer currently recognizing that a device is plugged in at all (such as making a chime sound when you plug in the USB cable), or is the printer completely invisible to the system?

Kind Regards,
