HP ENVY 110 e-All-in-One Printer - D411a
Microsoft Windows 11

My many years old 110 printer works fine, as long as it is next to me and I depress the power button before sending a print job.  The power save mode is set to go on after five minutes, and the "auto-off" feature is turned off.  But now the printer --- connected to my network --- is located across the house, and once it enters the power save mode, it is reported as "Off."   One cannot send a print job; it won't print.

Yes, its is a printer recognized in my HP Smart app.

Is there anyway to turn this printer on remotely, or must I go downstairs and turn it on manually every time I want to use it?

Hi @Curmudgeon10,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Unfortunately, there isn't a universal solution to remotely turn on the HP Envy 110 printer as it seems to be designed to require manual activation. However, you can try the following suggestions.

  • Check for Wake-On-LAN (WoL) Support: Some printers have Wake-On-LAN support, allowing them to be powered on remotely. Check the printer's manual or settings to see if this feature is available. If so, you might need to configure it in your network settings.
  • HP Smart App: Since you mentioned the printer is recognized in the HP Smart app, check if the app provides any remote power-on functionality. Some printer models have limited remote control options through their companion apps.
  • Scheduled Power On: Some printers have a scheduled power-on feature in their settings. If your printer has this option, you can schedule it to turn on before you typically use it.
  • Power Outlet Timer: Consider using a smart plug or a power outlet timer. These devices can be controlled remotely, allowing you to turn the power to the printer on or off as needed.
  • Network Wake-Up Tools: Investigate if there are any network wake-up tools or applications that can send a wake-up signal to the printer. This might require some technical knowledge and configuration.

If none of these options work, manual activation might be the only reliable method. Additionally, you may want to consider upgrading to a newer printer model with more advanced remote management features if remote printing convenience is crucial for you.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Look, very much appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.  Perhaps its just me, but when I visit a site like this, its only because I've already searched the internet and tried every "give this a try" found there. I'm looking for a definitive "this is the answer" or lacking that "what you want to do can't be done with your hardware."

Having said that, this problem fixed itself.  When I moved the printer to its new location and fired it up, it rejoined my network and then went to sleep.  When I tried to print to it through MS Word, the printer showed as "offline."  A quick check of HP Smart also showed it as offline.  That's when I sent the query to this board.  Subsequently, I opened HP Smart and tried communicating with the printer.  I can't recall EXACTLY what did it in terms of manipulations of HP Smart (it might have been something as simple as "Settings"), but from that point forward, the printer now operates as it should..  It is normally "sleeping," with the power indicator light off, but in apps, it is now shown as "online," and it does wake and print when a job is sent that way.
