@Rickwil, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Scanner Issues with HP ENVY 4520 Printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP ENVY 4520 printer is not scanning to the computer or not connecting when attempting to scan to a file, you can follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Check Cable Connections

Ensure that all cable connections are secure. If connected via USB, make sure the USB cable is properly plugged into both the printer and your computer. If using a wireless connection, confirm that the printer is connected to the same network as your computer.

Step 2: Verify Printer Power

Make sure the printer is powered on. The power button should be lit white.

Step 3: Check Wireless Connection

Check the wireless status light to ensure that your printer is connected to a network:

  • Solid blue light indicates a wireless connection is established.
  • Slow blinking light indicates wireless is on, but the printer is not connected to a network. Ensure the printer is within range of the wireless signal.
  • Fast blinking light indicates a wireless error. Refer to the message on the printer display.

Step 4: Use HP Smart App or Printer Software

Use the HP Smart app or the printer software to start the scanning process:

  1. Load the original print side down on the right front corner of the scanner glass.
  2. Open printer software:
    • Windows 8.1: Click the down arrow in the lower left corner of the Start screen, and then select the printer name.
    • Windows 8: Right-click an empty area on the Start screen, click "All Apps" on the app bar, and then select the printer name.
    • Windows 7, Vista, XP: From the computer desktop, click Start, select "All Programs", click "HP", click the folder for the printer, and then select the icon with the printer’s name.
  3. In the printer software, click "Scan a Document or Photo".

Step 5: Create a New Scan Shortcut

  1. Click "Create New Scan Shortcut".
  2. Enter a descriptive name, choose an existing shortcut, and then click "Create".
  3. Change the settings for your new shortcut to suit your needs, and then click the save icon to the right of the shortcut.
  4. For detailed settings adjustments, click the "More" link at the top right corner of the Scan dialog.

Step 6: Restart and Reset

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Reset the printer:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
    • Wait a minute, then plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
