HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One Printer
macOS 15.0 Sequoia

My HP 5530 e-All-in-One Printer displays the message: Update in Progress and refuses to print, however its scanner works fine.  I checked product updates using the printer's touchscreen. It displays the message:

No Update. Your printer has the most current updates installed. There are no new updates available at this time.

I've tried the recommendations from HP's ChatGPT assistant with no success.

I've found multiple posts for this issue affecting Envy 4500 machines, but the proposed solutions don't seem to apply to my 5530.  Has anyone else encountered this and solved it for a 5530?

Thanks very much!

Hi @paul876

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Your HP Envy 5530 is stuck showing “Update in Progress” even though no updates are available. The scanner working confirms the printer hardware is responsive, but the print system is stalled. The way forward is to refresh the printer’s connection, clear any stalled update process, and reinstall the driver/software on macOS.

Step 1: Power reset

  • Turn the printer off.
  • Disconnect the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Reconnect to the printer and power it on.
This clears any frozen update loop.

Step 2: Check printer status

  • On the touchscreen, confirm the printer reaches the home screen without looping back to “Update in Progress.”
  • If the message persists, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Remove and reinstall printer on macOS

  • On your Mac, go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select the HP Envy 5530 and click Remove Printer.
  • Restart your Mac.
  • Re‑add the printer by clicking Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax, then select your HP Envy 5530 from the list.
  • Ensure you select the driver labeled HP Envy 5530 series AirPrint or the full driver package if available.

Step 4: Update printer firmware manually

  • Visit HP’s support page for your printer: HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One Printer – Software and Drivers
  • Download and install the latest firmware update utility for macOS.
  • Run the update to ensure the printer’s internal software is refreshed.
  • Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support

Step 5: Reset network connection

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Setup > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
  • Reconnect the printer to your Wi‑Fi network.
  • On your Mac, re‑add the printer using the new connection.

Step 6: Print a test page

  • From macOS Printers & Scanners, select your printer.
  • Click Options & Supplies > Utility > Print Test Page.
  • Confirm that the printer responds and prints normally.

By following these steps, the “Update in Progress” message should clear, allowing the printer to resume normal printing.
