Dear All

I recently took delivery of a HP Envy 6100e printer scanner.  I installed the printer cartridges and scanned the QR code but it is not able to get past the Wi-Fi setup.  On the display it states 'processing' then after a few hours the following error message appears:

Setup Paused

For security purposes, the printer exits Wi-Fi setup mode after 2

Resume Setup

I have resumed several times even unplugging it to move it nearer the router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Hi @Len91,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Envy 6100e printer is stuck during Wi-Fi setup, showing “Setup Paused” even after multiple attempts. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

    a. Check Wi-Fi Network
        • Make sure your Wi-Fi network is 2.4 GHz, as most HP printers do not connect to 5 GHz networks.
        • Ensure the network is stable and the SSID (Wi-Fi name) does not contain special characters.
        • Temporarily disable guest networks or network isolation features if enabled.

    b. Place Printer Close to Router
        • Keep the printer within 1–2 meters of the Wi-Fi router for setup to avoid weak signal issues.

    c. Restart Devices
        • Power off the printer, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on.
        • Restart your Wi-Fi router.
        • Restart your computer or mobile device used for setup.

    d. Reset Printer Network Settings
        • On the printer control panel, go to Settings > Network > Restore Network Defaults.
        • This ensures any previous network info or errors are cleared.

    e. Use HP Smart App for Setup
        • Open HP Smart on your phone or computer.
        • Select Set Up a New Printer, then follow the on-screen instructions to connect to Wi-Fi.
        • Make sure your mobile device or PC is connected to the same network you want the printer on.

I hope this helps.

Dear Kuroi_Kenshi

Thank you very much for your reply and list of actions I could try to resolve the problem.

Regarding the first action about whether my WiFi is 2,4GHz, I contacted my internet provider (Sky) and they said my router broadcasts on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.  They said they could close the 5 GHz channel but it could affect some of my devices.  I have decided not to go down this route and instead return the printer and buy one that is a little more plug 'n' play.

I would say a design fault with this printer is the lack of a usable USB printer cable port forcing users to set-up using wireless.  There is one but it is covered by a sticker advising you not to use.

Once again thank you for your help.  I don't know why HP named a product range after one of the seven deadly sins?  Is it because trying to use them invokes another deadly sin: Anger?

Kind regards

Hi @Len91,

Haha, I’ve got to hand it to you, that last line gave me a good chuckle! 😄 You’re absolutely right, sometimes setting up printers can test even the calmest of souls!

That said, before you send your Envy (pun very much intended 😏) packing, there are a couple of quick tricks you could try, they might just save you the trouble of returning it:

1. Split the Wi-Fi Bands (without turning off 5 GHz)
Most Sky routers let you rename the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks separately (e.g., “HomeWiFi_2G” and “HomeWiFi_5G”).
Once renamed, connect both your phone and printer only to the 2.4 GHz network during setup.
After setup, the printer can usually stay connected without issues, even with both bands active.

2. Temporary Hotspot Trick
If the router keeps giving you trouble, use your phone’s hotspot as a bridge:
– Turn on your mobile hotspot (2.4 GHz only, if possible).
– Use another device with the HP Smart app to connect the printer to that hotspot.
– Once setup is complete, you can switch the printer back to your home Wi-Fi network via the app.

3. USB Setup Option (Yes, the “Do Not Use” Port)
That little sticker over the USB port is more of a gentle suggestion than a hard rule. 😉
You can remove it and use a standard USB-B cable temporarily to complete setup through the HP Smart app, especially handy if Wi-Fi setup refuses to cooperate.

I hope this helps.
