Yesterday I purchased a new HP Envy 6132e printer. Whats should have been a straightforward setup process turned in to an absolute nightmare!
The printer would not recognise my network when I tried the setup process using my laptop and the HP Smart app. Eventually I succeeded using the app on my phone but the Smart app kept displaying that the setup was incomplete and generating an error code when I tried to complete it. I could print from the devices but there was a huge lag between sending the print instruction and anything happening.
It has taken a 6 hour WhatsApp chat with HP to try and resolve this issue with download of software, factory reset, re-installation, etc to get it to work. During the process the HP app would not accept my router password when trying to connect even though it was correct! All three of my devices - laptop, desktop, and phone are now showing that the installation is complete. Printing is working but only via the Smart app so will have to do for now.
I remember the days when it was a simple case of plug in the printer and go.
Never again!

Hi @Gwyndy,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I’m really sorry to hear that your new HP Envy 6132e setup turned into such a frustrating experience. I can imagine how tiring it must’ve been spending hours just trying to get it up and running, especially when it should’ve been simple.
Let’s get things running smoothly.
Here are a few steps you can try to improve performance and finish setup:
Ensure Network Compatibility:
- Check Network Settings: Make sure your network is operating at 2.4 GHz rather than 5 GHz, as some HP printers may have connectivity issues with 5 GHz networks.
- Router Settings: Restart your router to refresh the network connection.
Reinstall HP Smart App:
- Uninstall and Reinstall HP Smart App: On both your laptop and phone, uninstall the HP Smart App. Then, download and reinstall it to ensure you're using the latest version.
- Update Device Software: Ensure that your phone and laptop have the latest software updates installed.
Complete Setup Process:
- Reset the Printer: Sometimes starting over helps. Reset the printer to factory defaults and try setting it up again.
- Follow In-App Instructions: During setup, ensure that all steps are completed as prompted by the HP Smart App. If you encounter any error codes, note them for troubleshooting.
Check HP Account:
- HP Account Sign-In: Make sure you are signed into your HP account in the app. Sometimes the setup appears incomplete if you are not logged in.
Test with Different Devices:
- Setup from Another Device: If the setup fails on one device, try using another device, such as a different phone or computer, to complete the configuration.
Manual Setup:
- Directly Connect Printer: You might also try manually connecting the printer to your network using the printer's control panel.
I truly appreciate your patience through all this. We’re here to help, and I’m hopeful your printing experience gets a whole lot better from here on out.

@Kuroi_Kenshi
Thank you for your reply.
Everything that you have mentioned was checked / done including the full factory reset of the printer. The initial problem was actually getting the printer to recognise the network. Even when I managed this the Smart app on all three devices (two PCs and a phone) said that the setup was not complete. When I tried to proceed I just kept getting error code OW_4XX_OWSWS00001 which I know has been discussed on other threads and forums. During the prolonged WhatsApp chat with HP we even got to the stage where the printer / app would not accept the router wireless key!
I was instructed to download and install the ' Full software and drivers' but that was a total disaster as the installation just hung at the 'Installing network device' stage. The chat had to stop as the agent had come to the end of their shift. Somehow I got there in the end and the printer is now working and accessible from all devices.
Setting up something as simple as a printer should not be so hit and miss. Fortunately I do have enough experience and knowledge of PCs to be able to battle my way through the process but what would someone without the capability do?
I have always been a fan of HP equipment including buying a new laptop last year but I will certainly be looking at other makes in future.

Hi @Gwyndy,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and wow, hats off to your persistence! I know the setup journey was anything but smooth, and I completely agree, something as essential as a printer should be much easier to get up and running.
That said, I’m really glad to hear that your HP Envy 6132e is finally working and responding across all your devices. There’s nothing quite like the satisfying hum of a printer coming to life and smoothly rolling out that first successful page, it’s a little victory, especially after everything you’ve been through!
If there's ever anything more you need or if the printer throws another curveball, we're just a message away. In the meantime, I hope it brings you nothing but crisp, clean prints and peaceful productivity from here on out.
Wishing you a great day ahead!
Warm regards,
Kuroi_Kenshi
