HP Envy 6155e

I just got this new printer. HP Envy 6155e. I cannot “wake” it up. The only way to get the screen to wake up is to unplug the machine. The power button on the back doesn’t work. It also will not air print from my phone. It worked one time and now it can’t be discoverable unless I unlit the printer, plug it back in, and then go through the WiFi setup again. Which is a pain in the rear! Help. I don’t think I can live like this.

Hi @ekwjr

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP Envy 6155e is having power management and connectivity issues, which can be incredibly frustrating, especially with a brand-new device.

Let’s try troubleshooting this step-by-step to resolve the issue:

1. Power Button and Sleep Mode

Confirm Power Button Functionality:

  • The power button on your printer should work to wake the screen or turn the printer on/off. If it doesn’t, there might be a hardware issue.
  • To test: Press and hold the power button for 3-5 seconds instead of a quick press. This may reset its response.

Disable Sleep Mode (if possible):

  • Open the HP Smart App or access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) settings:
    1. Enter the printer’s IP address (found via a network configuration page) into a web browser.
    2. Navigate to Settings > Energy Settings, and disable or adjust the sleep mode to prevent the printer from becoming unresponsive.

2. Firmware Update

  • It’s possible that outdated firmware is causing the unresponsiveness and AirPrint issues:
    1. Download the HP Printer Firmware Update Tool from the HP Support website.
    2. Ensure your printer is connected to your Wi-Fi during the update process.
    3. Apply the update and restart the printer.

3. Fixing AirPrint Discoverability

Check Printer and Device Connection:

  • Confirm your printer and phone are connected to the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (AirPrint requires this, and 5 GHz bands are not supported).

Reconfigure Wi-Fi on the Printer:

  • Reset the printer’s network settings:
    • Press and hold the Wireless button and the Cancel button for 5 seconds until the Wi-Fi light blinks.
    • Reconnect it to your network using the HP Smart App or WPS mode on your router.

Test AirPrint:

  • Once reconnected, check if AirPrint works by trying to print directly from a phone app like Safari or Notes. Ensure "HP Envy 6155e" appears as an available printer.

4. Printer Initialization and Hardware Check

Reset the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer, wait 2-3 minutes, and plug it directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  • Power it on, and check if the power button starts responding.

Inspect Power and Cables:

  • Make sure the power cable is securely connected to both the printer and the outlet. Replace the cable if it seems loose or damaged.
