HP ENVY 6420e
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, I just got an HP Envy 6420e printer. Since it is connected to my Wi-Fi, it does not auto-shut down. I was wondering if I should manually turn it off from the back of the machine or leave it on? Since I do not print frequently, only a couple of time every 2 weeks? The LED light bar at the front is also making me wonder if this printer takes up a lot of electricity when it is in Standby mode.

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that you are unable to set the Auto-off option on the printer, I am glad to assist you.

● Auto-Off is disabled when a printer’s wireless or Wi-Fi Direct capability is turned on or when a printer with fax, USB, or Ethernet network capability establishes a fax, USB, or Ethernet network connection.

However, you can set the printer to sleep mode.

Here are the steps, open the embedded web server through a network

  • From the printer control panel, press and hold (the Information button) until all the buttons light up, and then press and at the same time to print the wireless network test report and network configuration page.
  • Find out the IP address or hostname of the printer from the network configuration page.
  • In a supported web browser on your computer, type the IP address or hostname assigned to the printer.
  • For example, if the IP address is 192.168.0.12, type the following address into a web browser: https://192.168.0.12.
  • Click the Settings tab.
  • In the Power Management section, click Energy Save Mode, and select the desired option.
  • Click Apply.

Hi Sandy,

I understand the Energy Save Mode is supposed to reduce energy consumption, but the LED light bar on the printer is constantly on which makes me wonder if it's really saving more energy. Is it recommended to keep the printer on Energy Save Mode or would it be better if I just manually switched it off after each use?
