Have had nothing but problems with this printer. Cartridges drying out when printer is not used for a while. Now I get a new issue. Even though I had set updates to alert before update, the printer has installed a new driver/firmware (don't really know, just got a message after switching on hthat an update had been installed). With the result that I cannot use the printer anymore. Get a message saying that there is a communication error with cartridges. I am not able to ireset and install firmware manually. I can download firmware to computer, but when trying to select printer in update window the printer cannot be highlighted for update.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,
Try these steps -
1) Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent.
3) With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Wait for 60 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
Also, try cleaning the ink cartridges. Refer to steps # 3, and 4 from this document. By the end of the article, you will be able to isolate the issue.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you for posting back.
The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.
I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
