The previously working printer was not connecting to the computer as it usually does. I reset the router WPS, as that needs done occasionally. Also unplugged and restarted the printer. Now the printer will not move past the first dot on the restart screen. I have tried pressing the start button while plugged in, unplugged, while plugging back in, and every possible combination thereof. There are no other buttons that I can locate to perform any sort of system reset. I have also tried updating firmware via my computer but the printer will not connect to WiFi. Any other course of action or is this situation hopeless?

Hi @Kitzy

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm truly sorry you're facing this—when a previously reliable printer like the HP Envy Photo 7855 freezes at startup and won’t move past the first dot, it can feel like everything’s come to a standstill. That kind of behavior typically points to a firmware lockup or corrupted startup sequence, especially after a network reset.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path that may help bring the printer back to life:

Step-by-Step Recovery for HP Envy Photo 7855 Stuck on Startup

1. Perform a Reset

This reset bypasses the frozen startup and clears internal memory.

  • Power off the printer completely
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and wall outlet
  • Wait 60 seconds
  • While plugging the power cord back in, press and hold the Power button + Cancel (X) for 10–15 seconds
  • Release the buttons and wait for the printer to initialize

If this doesn’t work, proceed to the next method.

2. Access the Hidden Support Menu

Some HP models allow deeper resets via a hidden key sequence.

  • Power off the printer
  • Tap the Back arrow location on the touchscreen four times quickly (even if the screen is blank)
  • If the Support Menu appears, navigate to:
    • Reset Menu > Semi-Full Reset
  • Confirm and allow the printer to restart

This reset clears network settings, user data, and internal logs—but does not affect ink levels.

3. Use HP Firmware Recovery via USB

If the printer won’t connect to Wi-Fi, you can attempt a firmware flash using a USB drive.

  • Visit:
HP Envy Photo 7855 Drivers & Firmware
  • Download the firmware update utility
  • Extract the files and copy them to a FAT32-formatted USB drive
  • Insert the USB into the printer
  • Power on while holding Power + Cancel (X) for 10 seconds
  • Wait to see if the firmware recovery begins

4. Try Connecting via USB to HP Smart

If the printer partially boots, HP Smart may detect it and push a recovery update.

  • Download: HP Smart for Windows
  • Connect the printer via USB
  • Open HP Smart and attempt to add the printer
  • If detected, follow prompts to update firmware or reset

I understand how exhausting this has been, and I truly hope these steps help revive your printer. If you’d like help preparing the USB recovery or interpreting the reset sequence, I’m here to assist.
