HP Envy Photo Printer does not complete boot-up. Can not switch power off via the printer switch.  Disconnecting and reconnecting power cables has no affect. When connected to power the touch screen shows 7 dots and a progress bar.  The bar progresses once from left to right and only the first dot is illuminated.  That's as far as it gets.  No touch screen options are visible. Can it be factory reset?

Hi @GRANNYMAC07,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to see your HP Envy Photo printer frozen on that eerie screen of 7 dots and a stuck progress bar, especially when you're counting on it to just work. Let's walk through this together with care and clarity.

What’s Happening?

The issue you're describing, where the printer powers on but gets stuck with only the first dot illuminated and no touchscreen response, is typically a firmware boot failure or critical system hang. Unfortunately, in this state, the printer’s control panel is unresponsive, and standard factory reset methods via the touchscreen won’t work.

 Try This First: Power Reset

Sometimes, a deep power reset can help clear temporary glitches.

  1. Disconnect all cables, including power and USB.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the power button on the printer for 30 seconds (while unplugged).
  4. Reconnect only the power cable directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  5. Turn on the printer and observe if it boots past the 7-dot screen.

If this doesn’t help, proceed to the next step.

Attempt a Manual Factory Reset (for printers without touchscreen access)

For many HP ENVY printers, you can try this method:

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and the Wireless button simultaneously for at least 3 seconds.
  3. Wait about 20 seconds, then close the cartridge access door.
  4. The printer may restart and attempt to reset itself.

⚠️ This method may not work if the printer is severely stuck during boot. If the screen remains frozen, a firmware recovery or service may be needed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
